Readout of the Secretary-General's telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General and Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke on the telephone yesterday.

The Secretary-General conveyed to the Prime Minister his sympathy for the abducted Israeli teenagers and deep solidarity with their families.

He recalled that he had consistently and unambiguously spoken out on terrorism, and would continue to do so.

The Secretary-General also expressed concern over the increased violence, mass arrests, and restrictions on movement in the West Bank.

He further said that it was imperative, for both political and security reasons, not to give in to provocations in a way that seems likely to escalate  tensions still further.

The Secretary-General stressed that he expected all sides to exert efforts to this end, show restraint and to observe human rights standards and international law.
