Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr.Nicolás Maduro, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

The Secretary-General met with President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela on the margins of the G77 and China Summit.

The Secretary-General welcomed the efforts made by the Government of President Maduro to engage with the opposition and expressed the hope that all efforts would be made to achieve the resumption of the dialogue process supported by the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Holy See.

The Secretary-General made a special plea for Venezuela to enhance its assistance to Haiti, particularly with regard to addressing the cholera epidemic.

The Secretary-General and President Maduro also discussed ongoing climate change negotiations. President Maduro stated that Venezuela could be counted on to support Haiti and the United Nations’ efforts on climate change.
