Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

The Secretary-General and H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, met today on the eve of the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague. They discussed the Secretary-General’s recent visit to the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

The Secretary-General explained that his main objective had been to promote dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow and to encourage a peaceful solution to the crisis. He reiterated the importance that all parties work for a solution guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter, including respecting Ukraine’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He highlighted China’s important role in this regard, as a permanent member of the Security Council.

The Secretary-General and President Xi Jinping also discussed the upcoming Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) that will take place in Shanghai in May.
