The Secretary-General, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the President of the World Bank, the President of the African Development Bank, the Commissioner for Development of the European Union and the Representative of the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation met today with Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the President of Mali, on the margins of the Regional Ministerial Meeting on the Sahel taking place in Bamako.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed his solidarity with the people and Government of Mali and the Sahel and underscored the need for strengthened international cooperation to confront the challenges facing the region. He welcomed the Ministerial Meeting hosted by the Government of Mali as an opportunity to listen to the concerns and priorities of the countries of the region and enhance coordination among international partners.
The Secretary-General and the President of Mali also discussed the situation in the country. The Secretary-General welcomed the important progress made in the last year with the signature of the Ouagadougou Preliminary Agreement and the successful holding of presidential elections. He noted that these were the first steps on the long road to peace and stability. He underlined the importance of addressing the root causes of the crisis through improved governance, the protection of human rights and the extension of state authority throughout the country. He underscored the need for an inclusive national dialogue and reconciliation and an inclusive approach to the upcoming legislative elections. He reassured the President of his commitment to reinforce the capacity of UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in order for the Mission to fulfill its mandate.

Le Secrétaire général, la Présidente de la Commission de l’Union africaine, le Président de la Banque mondiale, le Président de la Banque africaine de développement, le Commissaire au développement de l’Union européenne et le Représentant du Secrétaire général de l’Organisation de la Coopération Islamique, ont rencontré aujourd’hui Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Président du Mali, en marge de la réunion ministérielle sur le Sahel qui s’est déroulée à Bamako.
Le Secrétaire général a réaffirmé sa solidarité avec le peuple et le Gouvernement du Mali, et du Sahel, et a souligné la nécessité de renforcer la coopération internationale pour faire face aux défis de la région. Il a salué la tenue de la réunion ministérielle, organisée par le Gouvernement du Mali, et a affirmé qu’elle représentait une opportunité d’écouter les inquiétudes et les priorités des pays de la région ainsi que de renforcer la coordination entre partenaires internationaux.
Le Secrétaire général et le Président du Mali ont également discuté de la situation dans le pays. Le Secrétaire général a salué les importants progrès faits au cours de la dernière année avec la signature de l’Accord préliminaire de Ouagadougou et la tenue des élections présidentielles. Il a noté que celles-ci constituaient de premières étapes sur le long chemin menant à la paix et la stabilité. Il a souligné l’importance de se pencher sur les causes profondes de la crise en améliorant la gouvernance, la protection des droits de l’Homme et l’autorité de l’État sur tout le territoire. Il a aussi mis en avant l’importance d’un dialogue national inclusif, de la réconciliation ainsi que de l’adoption d’une approche inclusive pour les prochaines élections législatives. Il a réaffirmé au Président son engagement à renforcer les capacités de la Mission des Nations Unies au Mali (MINUSMA) afin qu’elle puisse exécuter son mandat.
