Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Idriss Déby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Idriss Déby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad. The Secretary-General thanked Chad for its contribution to peace efforts in Africa, most recently as a troop contributor in Mali. They also discussed the humanitarian situation in Chad, in particular the increasing number of refugees and internally displaced persons.

The Secretary-General and President Déby Itno also exchanged views on the situation in the neighbouring Central African Republic and underlined the urgency to re-establish security, increase international support to the transition and address humanitarian needs. The Secretary-General also confirmed the readiness of the United Nations to support Chad in the upcoming electoral process.
