Aqaba, Jordan, 15 August 2013

The Secretary-General met today with His Majesty, King Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Secretary-General and His Majesty discussed US Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts to resume negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The Secretary-General commended the King’s personal role and Jordan’s continued efforts in recent years to get the Israeli–Palestinian dialogue back on track.

On Syria, the Secretary-General expressed gratitude for the generosity of the Jordanian Government and people in hosting over half a million Syrian refugees at a time when Jordan’s absorption capacity was overstretched. Both recognized that it was critical for the international community to share the burden that Jordan is carrying.  The Secretary-General also briefed the King on the UN's efforts in Syria, including regarding the Geneva conference proposed by the Russian Federation and the United States.

On Egypt, they discussed Wednesday's violence. The Secretary-General noted the need to move forward with a political process and genuine reconciliation in Egypt.

The Secretary-General also praised the King's initiative aimed at inter-faith dialogue.  He encouraged the King to continue to exercise his leadership role in this regard.
