Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe,
Prime Minister of Japan

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, on the sidelines of the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V).

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation to Japan for hosting this important event and for Japan’s multifaceted contributions to promoting development in Africa and congratulated the country for the successful holding of TICAD V.

Expressing his deep appreciation for Japan’s active role in the United Nations, the Secretary-General stressed the need for the country's strong leadership regarding the Organization’s reform, as well as on human security, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the post-2015 development agenda.

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Japan’s positive engagement on peace and security issues, including its participation in United Nation peacekeeping efforts. 

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister also exchanged views on the situation in Syria and the Korean Peninsula, among other issues.
