Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with Mr. Laurent Lamothe, Prime Minister of Haiti

The Secretary-General met with Prime Minister Lamothe of Haiti. They discussed the current situation and the work of the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti.  The Secretary-General encouraged the Prime Minister to undertake every effort to hold long overdue partial legislative and local elections before the end of the year. The Secretary-General also called on the Government of Haiti to reach out to all sectors of society in order to forge an urgently needed consensus on the way forward.

The Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations' commitment to support the Government of Haiti in its fight to eradicate the cholera and urged the Government to take appropriate measures on the issue of camp residents at risk of forced eviction. The Secretary-General also called for momentum to eradicate poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals in the next thousand days.
