The Secretary-General met today with the Prime Minister of Spain, H. E. Mr. Mariano Rajoy Brey. During the meeting, they exchanged views on a broad range of topics of mutual interest to Spain and the United Nations.
The Secretary-General and Prime Minister Rajoy discussed global challenges such as climate change, energy and attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the target year of 2015. In that regard, they agreed on the need to accelerate progress in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and to define a comprehensive post-2015 agenda that will address key interrelated issues for sustainable development.
Regarding peace and security matters, the Secretary-General and the Prime Minister focussed their discussion on Syria, Mali, Western Sahara and the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea.
The Secretary-General commended Spain for its strong support to the Organization, in areas such as development, humanitarian assistance, peacekeeping operations, and for its active role on the UN Human Rights Council. The Secretary-General expressed particular appreciation for Spain´s continuing support to the United Nations information and communications Support Base in Valencia.
