Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Armando Emílio Guebuza, President of the Republic of Mozambique and Chair of the Southern African Development Community

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Armando Emílio Guebuza, President of the Republic of Mozambique and Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The Secretary-General commended the role of SADC in the search for a lasting solution to the crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They also discussed the Secretary-General's intention to propose to the Security Council the deployment of an Intervention Brigade within the UN mission in the DRC, MONUSCO. The Secretary-General welcomed SADC member states' expression of interest to volunteer and contribute to such a Brigade. They pledged to maintain close cooperation between their organizations to ensure the success of the comprehensive approach to the crisis.

The Secretary-General also discussed the role of his envisaged Special Envoy in supporting the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region.
