The Secretary-General met today with members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the United States House of Representatives including Edward R. Royce, Chairman (R- California), and Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member (D-New York).
They discussed Syria and the impact of the crisis on Syria's neighbours; Mali and the potential peacekeeping role for the UN; Israel and the need for direct negotiations for a two-state solution; Iran and the risks of nuclear proliferation; UN transparency and reform; human rights, global development and how to combat unemployment, climate change and the role of U.S. leadership globally.
The Secretary-General expressed his strong appreciation for U.S. leadership in and partnership with the United Nations.
