Readout for the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E Mr. Dioncounda Traoré, Interim President of Mali

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Dioncounda Traoré, Interim President of Mali, to discuss the situation in his country and the United Nations efforts towards the implementation of Security Council resolution 2085 (2012).

 

The Secretary-General welcomed the bilateral support provided to the Government of Mali in its efforts to counter the Jihadist groups’ attacks. He stressed the need to pursue a political process that would lead to a consensual roadmap for the transition to full constitutional order, in parallel with ongoing military operations. The Secretary-General expressed concerns over reports of human rights violations and called on the President to ensure that human rights and humanitarian norms are respected by national and international troops in Mali. They discussed the deployment of AFISMA and UN support in this regard. They also exchanged views on the newly-established UN multidisciplinary office in Bamako.
