Readout of Secretary-General's telephone call with H.E. Michel Sleiman, President of Lebanon

Following his earlier telephone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati, the Secretary-General spoke with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman today to express outrage over yesterday's bombing attack that killed General Wissam al-Hassan and caused other casualties and extensive damage. The Secretary-General conveyed condolences to the President and expressed his hope for a speedy recovery for those wounded. He underscored the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Secretary-General underscored the importance of President Sleiman and Prime Minister Mikati continuing their policy of protecting Lebanon by dissociating the country from regional events. The Secretary-General affirmed the strong commitment of the international community for Lebanon's sovereignty and stability. Noting the need for strong leadership at this critical time, he pledged his support to President Sleiman and Prime Minister Mikati.
