The Secretary-General met with H.E Mr. Dai Bingguo, State Councilor of the People's Republic of China, in Beijing today.

On Wednesday, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, Vice-President of the People's Republic of China, and H.E. Mr. Li Yuanchao, Minister of the Central Organization Department and Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee.

In his meetings, the Secretary-General underscored his appreciation for China’s leadership and active participation in the United Nations. He stressed the importance of China’s role in the maintenance of international peace and security as well as the promotion of sustainable development. They discussed ways of addressing global challenges through collective action and multilateralism, and of further boosting cooperation between China and the United Nations.

The Secretary-General lauded China’s continued economic and social progress, including towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. He said the ministerial conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was an important initiative underscoring South-South cooperation. 

The Secretary-General discussed the global challenges facing the world and exchanged views on peace-keeping, peacebuilding, disaster risk reduction, disarmament and human rights.

They also discussed a number of regional topics of mutual concern.
