Readout of Secretary-General's meeting with Iraqi officials and other leaders in Baghdad

The Secretary-General had a range of meetings with Iraqi and other leaders in Baghdad on the margins of the League of Arab States summit in Baghdad today.
 
Among Iraqi officials, he met separately with the President, H.E Mr. Jalal Talabani, the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Nuri Kamel Al-Maliki, the Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Hoshyar Zebari, and the Speaker of Parliament, H.E. Mr. Osama Al-Nujaifi.
 
In those meetings, the Secretary-General discussed the summit, Iraqi political developments, relations between Iraq and Kuwait, and Syria. He also spoke about national reconciliation, women's empowerment and young people. With the Prime Minister, the Secretary-General also discussed progress on the Camp Ashraf question.
 
In his meeting with the President of Tunisia, H.E. Mr. Moncef Marzouki, the discussion focussed on Syria, the Maghreb region and Yemen, as well as political developments in Tunisia.
 
When the Secretary-General met the President of the Palestinian National Authority, H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, he discussed the latest developments in the Middle East peace process.
 
The Secretary-General's meeting with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, H.E. Nabil Al-Araby, focussed on Syria and the work of the Joint Special Envoy, Mr. Kofi Annan. They agreed to continue to coordinate closely and that it was imperative for President Assad to match is commitments with action.
