Readout of Secretary-General's meeting with Singaporean leaders

Singapore, 23 March 2012

The Secretary-General met separately today with a range of Singaporean leaders.
 
In his meeting with H.E. Mr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, the President of Singapore, the two leaders discussed, among other matters, UN-Singapore cooperation and the ASEAN-UN partnership, as well as other regional and global topics including Myanmar, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the UN’s June Rio+20 sustainable development conference. They also discussed the DPRK, nuclear security, the Forum of Small Island States and gender empowerment.    
 
The Secretary-General commended Singapore’s contribution to the UN’s work, including in the areas of peacekeeping and sustainable development.
 
In the meeting with H.E. Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, the leaders exchanged views on ways to implement the comprehensive UN-ASEAN partnership framework, as well as developments in Syria, Myanmar and the MDGs.  On Rio+20, the Secretary-General said there was the expectation of achieving a bold, forward-looking outcome document and a host of concrete initiatives.            
 
The Secretary-General also met H.E. Mr. K. Shanmugam, the Foreign Minister of Singapore.  Topics covered included a wide range of regional and international matters, including Timor Leste, South Sudan, Syria, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya and  gender empowerment.
