Read-out of the Secretary-General's telephone conversation with President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

During a telephone conversation which took place today, the Secretary-General expressed his hope that, as a follow-up to his recent visit to the region, President Abbas would remain engaged with the dialogue efforts led by Jordan's King Abdullah. The Secretary-General and President Abbas discussed the unity talks between the President and Hamas leader Khaled Meshal in Doha regarding the formation of a new government. The Secretary-General emphasized that the United Nations has consistently supported Palestinian reconciliation within the framework of the PLO principles and under the leadership of President Abbas. He pointed out that the two tracks - of Palestinian reconciliation and negotiations with Israel - should not be seen as contradictory and mutually exclusive.
