Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Moncef Marzouki, President of Tunisia, on the margins of the AU Summit

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Moncef Marzouki, President of Tunisia, on the margins of the AU Summit. The Secretary-General congratulated President Marzouki on his election and expressed hope that the new Tunisian Government would continue to work to meet the aspirations of the Tunisian people. The Secretary-General noted that it was a positive development that over a fifth of elected Members of the Constituent Assembly were women and hoped this level of representation would eventually be reflected in the leadership positions in the country. The Secretary General thanked the President for the humanitarian assistance provided to the thousands of people who transited through Tunisian during the Libyan conflict and enquired about Tunisia's economic recovery efforts. The Secretary General reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to continue to support Tunisia through its historic transition.
