Secretary-General’s remarks at the appointment of British Actor Daniel Craig as the UN Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and other Explosive Hazards [as delivered]

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

It is a great honour for me to welcome Mr. Daniel Craig to the United Nations. Today, we are very encouraged that we are going to appoint him as the United Nations Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and [other] Explosive Hazards.

He is known as 007 James Bond; I’m 008 - United Nations Secretary-General Ki-moon Ban! I am very happy that you have agreed to use your global star power to raise awareness and global action to destroy mines which have been killing many people.

You have been given [the] license to kill; I’m now giving you a license to save. As a very avid movie watcher, I have always been sitting on the edge of my seat watching 007 James Bond diffuse ticking time bombs to save lives in just a few seconds. I really appreciate such a global action.

I would like to ask you to use your global star influence to mobilize [support] and visit our mine training action [programmes] as well as mobilize political and financial support for this noble cause. I sincerely hope that you will be able to shape the world for global action. I really thank you very much and congratulations.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce [the] United Nations Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines as well as [other] Explosive Hazards.
