Secretary-General on Video Message for the 8th General Assembly of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP)

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

I am pleased to greet the 8th General Assembly of the ICAPP. I thank Sri Lanka’s Freedom Party and United National Party for jointly hosting this meeting.

Asia is one of the world’s most dynamic regions, and is achieving rapid economic growth and reducing overall poverty. At the same time, the region faces many serious challenges, including growing inequalities, environmental degradation, political and communal tensions as well as a rise of extremism and radicalism.

There is no better way to overcome differences, foster mutual trust and build confidence among Asia’s diverse ethnicities and religions than strengthening democracy and respect for human rights.

Asian political parties have a responsibility to demonstrate leadership in this effort.  I encourage you to build an inclusive, prosperous and peaceful region, and to pursue sustainable development for all.

I look forward to working with you to shape a bold post-2015 development agenda, address the challenges posed by climate change and ensure the protection of the human rights of women, minorities and the vulnerable.

Thank you for your commitment to the United Nations, and please accept my best wishes for a productive meeting.

Thank you.
