Message on the Parliamentary Election in the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

Dear citizens of Timor-Leste,

On July 7th, you will once again have the opportunity to exercise your democratic right, as you choose your country’s new leaders in parliamentary elections.

I am very encouraged that the presidential election was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

As your country starts the election campaign for the next Parliament, I call on all citizens to ensure that the election is credible, transparent and peaceful.

I urge the political parties to demonstrate a sense of responsibility, and to honour their commitment to peace, democracy and national unity.

On behalf of the United Nations, I wish the people of Timor-Leste all the best for the election.

You have our full support as you continue to build a peaceful and prosperous future.

Viva Timor-Leste!
