STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON FOR THE

SECRETARY-GENERAL

The Secretary-General welcomes the return to Burundi of the Chairman of the Palipehutu-FNL, Mr. Agathon Rwasa. This significant development follows a number of positive steps in the Burundi peace process, including the 26 May Joint Declaration on the cessation of hostilities between the Government of Burundi and Palipehutu-FNL.

The Secretary-General urges Palipehutu-FNL and the Government of Burundi to seize this opportunity to finally end long-standing conflict in Burundi. He urges them to stay the course and implement the agreements reached between them without delay.

The Secretary-General appreciates the critical role played by the leaders of the Regional Peace Initiative for Burundi, the South African Facilitation and the Political Directorate and encourages them to continue their assistance to the parties.

DECLARATION ATTRIBUABLE A LA PORTE-PAROLE DU SECRETAIRE GENERAL DES NATIONS UNIES SUR LE BURUNDI

Le Secrétaire général accueille favorablement le retour au Burundi du Président du Palipehutu-FNL, M. Agathon Rwasa. Ce développement significatif fait suite à un certain nombre d'autres avancées positives dans le cadre du processus de paix au Burundi, y compris la Déclaration conjointe de cessation des hostilités entre le Gouvernement du Burundi et le Palipehutu-FNL du 26 mai.

Le Secrétaire général engage le Palipehutu-FNL et le Gouvernement du Burundi à saisir cette occcasion pour mettre finalement un terme au conflit qui perdure au Burundi. Il les exhorte à poursuivre leurs efforts et à mettre immédiatement en ?uvre les accords conclus.

Le Secrétaire général exprime son appréciation pour le rôle primordial joué par les dirigeants de l'Initiative régionale de la paix au Burundi, la Facilitation sud-africaine ainsi que le Directoire politique et les invite à maintenir leur soutien aux parties.
