Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, on the margins of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

The leaders discussed the haze issue in Southeast Asia and the Secretary-General expressed sympathy to the people across the region affected by the disaster. They also highlighted the need for serious collective efforts, regionally and globally, to address the issue. They also stressed the importance of working together to strengthen disaster preparedness and response measures in the region.

The Secretary-General told the President that he looked forward to his participation at climate change conference in Paris and commended the country for submitting its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) in September 2015. 

They also discussed the role of the ASEAN-UN partnership in addressing regional and global issues, including sustainable development, conflict prevention and the threat of violent extremism.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed irregular migration in the Southeast Asia and the need to share responsibilities. The Secretary-General also informed about plans to convene a global summit to address irregular migration in September 2016.
