Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan.

They discussed sustainable development and climate change, including melting glaciers.

The Secretary-General welcomed the steps taken by Tajikistan to engage with the United Nations on human rights and looked forward to strengthening this cooperation. He also underscored the need to uphold human rights in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

The Secretary-General welcomed President Rahmon’s leadership in addressing the needs of land-locked developing countries. He commended Tajikistan’s efforts to promote regional cooperation and welcomed its engagement with UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).
