Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Mr. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo

The Secretary-General met today with President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea. The Secretary-General commended President Obiang’s participation at today’s General Assembly’s thematic debate on “Peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa”.   

The two leaders discussed the cooperation of Equatorial Guinea with the United Nations and expressed their commitment to intensify efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals. The Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to continue to lend its support to the efforts of Equatorial Guinea and Gabon towards a peaceful settlement of their border dispute, through referral to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a timely manner.

The Secretary-General and President Obiang also discussed the preparations of the 36th Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa, scheduled to take place in the coming months. President Obiang reiterated his country’s readiness to host the meeting.
