The Deputy Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize.

The Deputy Secretary-General and the Prime Minister discussed the recent incident in the Chiquibul National Park on 21 April which resulted in the regrettable death of a 13-year-old Guatemalan national.  
The Deputy Secretary-General welcomed the announcement that the Organization of American States would conduct an independent investigation to establish the facts.  He was confident that both countries would respect the outcome of the investigation.

The Deputy Secretary-General stressed the importance of continued dialogue to avoid any further escalation of tensions.
