10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production:
The Marrakech  Process

The participatory nature of the Commission on Sustainable Development is reflected in the Marrakech Process and its provision for public participation. Major groups are expected to contribute to the elaboration of the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) by providing new ideas, challenges and information and enriching the inter-governmental debate. Furthermore, major groups are expected to play a significant role as partners in the implementation of initiatives to accelerate the shift towards sustainable consumption and production.

Although the international and regional consultations related to the Marrakech Process are not intended to be large fora, a limited and representative number of major group organisations are expected to participate and contribute to the process through interactive discussions, roundtables and panels.

The role of major groups in implementation of the SCP agenda is essential and we look to them to participate actively in multi-stakeholder partnerships and joint implementation initiatives.

A number of case studies are described in a background paper on the role of major groups in implementing sustainable consumption and production programmes.

Similarly the database on sustainable consumption and production programmes contains information on many initiatives in which major groups are taking the lead or cooperating.

Several registered partnerships for sustainable development also include multistakeholder approaches to sustainable consumption and production.

We look forward to exploring new ways to enhance major groups・ participation in the Marrakech Process and welcome your suggestions.
