International Youth Day Photo Contest

“Sustainable Food: Youth Leading the Way”

August 12 is International Youth Day, and this year’s theme focuses on how young people lead in sustainability. In order to mark the day, the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth and the Zero Hunger Challenge are happy to announce the launch of a photo contest on youth leading in the sustainable consumption and production of food!

Using #SustainableYouth and #ZeroHunger, share your best photos on Instagram and Twitter of young people leading in consuming and producing food in a sustainable and healthy way!

The winners of the contest will be announced on International Youth Day, and the winning photo will be turned into an official Zero Hunger Challenge Digital Card. As you share your photos, make sure you tag @UNYouthEnvoy and @ZeroHunger on Twitter, and @unyouthenvoy and @zerohungerchallenge on Instagram!

Goal 12 of the Sustainable Development Agenda is on “Ensuring Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns.” Sustainable consumption and production aims at “doing more and better with less.”

A few facts about why this matters:

  • 3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year while almost 1 billion people go undernourished and another 1 billion hungry;
  • Overconsumption of food is detrimental to our health and the environment.
  • 2 billion people globally are overweight or obese.
  • The food sector accounts for around 30 per cent of the world’s total energy consumption and accounts for around 22 per cent of total Greenhouse Gas emissions.
