The Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth was proud to participate in the March for Gender Equality and Women’s Rights on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2015, in New York City.
The walk, organized by UN Women was an historic moment in uniting people of all backgrounds to advocate for a 50-50 Planet by 2030.
Women’s rights will be one of the key issues that will define our generation. From ending violence against women, to getting equal pay for equal work, it is time that we stand up and fight for half of the world’s population
“When you hold back half of our population, we cannot realize 100 per cent of our potential. We have to fully respect and use the potential of all of our women” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the opening ceremony that took place in front of the United Nations Headquarters.
Participants of the March participated in the #YouthNow campaign to show their support for more investment into girls and young women.
#YouthNow was launched by Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon with the support of the Office of the President of the General Assembly in February 2015. During the week of 9 March, the #YouthNow conversation will focus on Young Girls and Women. Learn more about #YouthNow and get involved!
