In Somalia the real “shabab”, which means “youth” in Arabic, are the young people who are working to rebuild their country, not the Al Shabaab “radical extremist group”.
That’s the view of Ahmad Alhendawi, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth who recently visited Somalia to reaffirm the support of the United Nations to youth development in the East African country.
Young people under 30 years of age represent more than two thirds of the population of Somalia, making it one of the countries with the largest youth populations in the world.
