Violence against women

Work of the General Assembly on violence against women

In 1993, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (A/RES/48/104, of 19 December 1993).

In 1999, the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In recent years, the General Assembly has dealt with a number of particular forms, or aspects of violence against women.  Since 2000, the topics covered by the General Assembly have included:

Trafficking in women and girls
Crimes committed in the name of honour
Violence against women migrant workers
Traditional or customary practices affecting the health of women and girls
Domestic violence

The General Assembly also mandated the preparation of an in-depth study, by the Secretary-General, on all forms of violence against women.
