Water for Life Voices

Knowledge Bank. Saving Benin’s lakes and wetlands

Organization: International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Some of Benin's lakes and wetlands had been depleted of fish due to overfishing and degradation of mangroves and natural habitats. Now these lakes are being rehabilitated and fishermen and fish-sellers are finding alternative ways to make a living.

If done right, agriculture, forestry and fisheries can provide nutritious food for all and generate decent incomes, while supporting people-centred rural development and protecting the environment.

Climate change is putting even more pressure on the resources the population depends on, increasing risks associated with disasters such as droughts and floods. Many rural women and men find it difficult to make ends meet on their land, and many have to migrate to cities in search of opportunities.

The food and agriculture sector offers key solutions for development, and is central for hunger and poverty eradication.
