CHAIR SUMMARY<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>2<\/span><\/b>nd<\/span><\/b>\u00a02025 Civil Society Consultations<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201cEngagement with Latin American Civil Society & Palestinian Diaspora: A Call for Action to Ensure Recovery and Healing in Gaza and to End Israel\u2019s Illegal Occupation\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>were\u00a0convened at the headquarters of the\u00a0Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Santiago\u00a0de Chile,\u00a0by\u00a0the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP).\u00a0In the margins of the event,\u00a0the Committee Delegation held bilateral meetings\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>with current and former Chilean parliamentarians as well as the President of the Palestinian Community in Chile, Mr. Maurice Khamis, to learn about the engagement of the Palestinian community vis-\u00e0-vis the question of Palestine and efforts in parliament, such as the proposed law banning the import of goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory\u00a0(OPT)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The Committee Delegation also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Alberto van\u00a0Klaveren, and former Chilean diplomats and current international affairs practitioners at the Permanent Forum on Foreign Policy. The Delegation also held discussions with students\u00a0at\u00a0the Institute of International Studies (IEI) of the University of Chile, centering around the work of the Committee, the situation in Gaza and the wider OPT.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the event,\u00a0<\/span>Government authorities and representatives of civil society organizations and the Palestinian diaspora in Latin America reaffirmed their commitment to and solidarity with the Palestinian people, and called on the international community to ensure the ceasefire and the comprehensive recovery of Gaza, urging for an end to Israel\u2019s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory and for resolute progress to be made on implementing the two-State solution as the surest path towards peace and security in the Middle East.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the\u00a0Opening\u00a0Session,\u00a0<\/span>Chile<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Alberto van\u00a0Klaveren<\/span><\/b>, stressed that\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0is a duty of the international community and societies to accompany the recovery and healing in Gaza\u00a0with\u00a0opening\u00a0a path that makes it possible for\u00a0the\u00a0two peoples\u00a0\u2013 Israelis and Palestinians \u2013\u00a0to live in peace and with equal rights. In this effort, civil society and the Palestinian community are indispensable allies, and the\u00a0UN Committee\u00a0for Palestinian Rights\u00a0is a key partner in keeping the issue on the agenda and translating international norms into effective protection.\u00a0The\u00a0Foreign\u00a0Minister underscored the value of the meeting between Latin American civil society and the Palestinian community,\u00a0saying that\u00a0\u201cLatin America knows, from its own history, the power of human bonds to rebuild the social fabric, build bridges and cultivate a culture of peace that transcends borders. Multilateralism is the channel to transform that experience into results: better coordination of aid, protection of the civilian population and sustaining a serious political path.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During his speech, the Foreign Minister\u00a0also\u00a0reaffirmed Chile\u2019s historical position on the Palestinian issue, which has been supported by all governments since the issue was incorporated into the United Nations agenda in 1947 and which\u00a0constitutes\u00a0a\u00a0state policy. Chile supports\u00a0the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and an independent State,\u00a0viable\u00a0and contiguous, living side by side in peace and security with the State of Israel, within secure and internationally recognized borders,\u00a0in accordance with\u00a0the relevant resolutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
