{"id":305481,"date":"2025-02-05T10:04:37","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T15:04:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=305481"},"modified":"2025-02-06T11:12:27","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T16:12:27","slug":"un-secretary-generals-remarks-421-ceirpp-05feb25","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/un-secretary-generals-remarks-421-ceirpp-05feb25\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations \u2018Fully Committed to Peace, Stability, Inalienable Rights of Palestinian People\u2019, UN Secretary-General Tells Palestinian Rights Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>05 February 2025<\/p>\n<p>Following are UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u2019 remarks to the opening of the 2025\u00a0session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, in New York today:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ambassador Coly Seck, Bureau members, let me begin by congratulating you on your election.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I want to salute this Committee for its work.\u00a0 At its essence, the exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people is about the right of Palestinians to simply live as human beings in their own land.<\/p>\n<p>We have seen the realization of those rights steadily slip farther out of reach.\u00a0 We have seen a chilling, systematic dehumanization and demonization of an entire people.\u00a0 Of course, nothing justifies the horrific Hamas attacks of 7\u00a0October\u00a02023.\u00a0And nothing justifies what we have seen unfold in Gaza over the last many months.<\/p>\n<p>We all know too well the catalogue of destruction and unspeakable horrors.\u00a0 The nearly 50,000\u00a0people \u2014 70\u00a0per\u00a0cent of them women and children \u2014 who have been reported killed.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Gaza\u2019s civilian infrastructure \u2014 hospitals, schools and water facilities \u2014 that has been destroyed.\u00a0 The overwhelming majority of the entire population who have faced displacement after displacement, hunger and disease.\u00a0 Children, out of school for over a year.\u00a0 A generation, left homeless and traumatized.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"UN Secretary-General Warns Against Ethnic Cleansing in Gaza, Palestine\" width=\"1320\" height=\"743\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LQxSmkS_nlo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>I welcome the ceasefire and hostage release deal.\u00a0 I thank the mediators \u2014 Egypt, Qatar and the United States \u2014 for the continued efforts to ensure implementation.\u00a0 Now, it is time to be crystal clear about objectives going forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, we must keep pushing for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all hostages without delay.\u00a0 We cannot go back to more death and destruction.\u00a0 For our part, the UN is working around the clock to reach Palestinians in need and scale up support.\u00a0 That requires humanitarian access that is rapid, safe, unimpeded, expanded and sustained.<\/p>\n<p>I call on Member States, donors, and the international community to fully fund humanitarian operations and meet urgent needs.\u00a0 And I once again urge Member States to support the essential work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East\u00a0(UNRWA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>, in the search for solutions, we must not make the problem worse.\u00a0 It is vital to stay true to the bedrock of international law.\u00a0<em> It is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Third<\/strong>, we must reaffirm the two-State solution.\u00a0 Any durable peace will require tangible, irreversible and permanent progress towards the two-State solution, an end to the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, with Gaza as an integral part.\u00a0 A viable, sovereign Palestinian State living side by side in peace and security with Israel is the only sustainable solution for Middle East stability.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Gaza, the situation continues to unravel in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.\u00a0 I am gravely concerned by rising violence by Israeli settlers and other violations.\u00a0 The violence must stop.<\/p>\n<p>As affirmed by the International Court of Justice, Israel\u2019s occupation of the Palestinian territory must end.\u00a0 International law must be respected and accountability ensured.<\/p>\n<p>We must work towards preserving the unity, contiguity and integrity of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza.\u00a0 A strong and unified Palestinian governance is crucial.\u00a0 The international community must support the Palestinian Authority to this end.<\/p>\n<p>The UN is fully committed to peace, stability and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.\u00a0 I commend this Committee for its steadfast dedication to these goals and call on the international community to fully support these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>And I thank you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
