That&#8217;s level three of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) index (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/03\/1147661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/03\/1147661&amp;amp;source=gmail&amp;amp;ust=1719401363349000&amp;amp;usg=AOvVaw1yOaL9uG17um4h8YK8ubTs\">check out our explainer on the IPC system here<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Included in this number are almost half a million people enduring \u201ccatastrophic\u201d conditions (IPC level five), the IPC update noted, underscoring the \u201chigh risk\u201d of famine across the whole Gaza Strip \u201cas long as conflict continues and humanitarian access is restricted\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Access critical<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the same time, the update pointed to \u201ca slight improvement\u201d in the food security situation in Gaza\u2019s northern governorates, where potential famine was feared by the end of May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe improvement shows the difference that greater access can make,\u201d said the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in response to the IPC findings. \u201cIncreased food deliveries to the north and nutrition services have helped to reduce the very worst levels of hunger, leaving a\u00a0<strong>still desperate situation<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Not one centimetre is safe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are \u201cno safe centimetres left\u201d in Gaza, where the laws of war continue to be disregarded at the expense of the shattered enclave\u2019s people and humanitarian organizations, a UN aid worker said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to journalists in Geneva after her second deployment to Gaza, Yasmina Guerda from the UN aid coordination office (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/un-geneva-press-briefing-250624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OCHA<\/a>) said that delivering aid there has become an exasperating \u201cdaily puzzle\u201d that has left malnourished children without the lifesaving help they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA direct observation on the ground every day is\u00a0<strong>that there are no safe centimetres left in Gaza.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>There is nowhere you can be and be certain that there isn\u2019t going to be an attack on you that night<\/strong>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly nine months of intense Israeli bombardment and ground operations sparked by Hamas-led attacks and hostage-taking on 7 October, basic needs are greater than ever for Gazans forced to flee their homes at a moment\u2019s notice, in line with repeated orders to evacuate issued by the Israeli military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>You have 10 to 15 minutes to leave your building because it\u2019s going to be bombed. Your kids are sleeping in the room next door,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Ms. Guerda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to make split-second decisions to decide what to pack, what\u2019s essential. How do you define what\u2019s essential? We were working a couple of kilometres away and the walls, the doors, the windows of our building were shaking. We didn\u2019t know what was happening. We found out after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the attack, Ms. Guerda described going to the field hospital and finding children who had lost limbs \u201cstaring in the void,\u00a0<strong>too shellshocked to produce a sound or a tear<\/strong>. For those who survived the bombing of their neighbourhood by getting away on time, it\u2019s only the beginning of the nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting humanitarian relief to these survivors and the more than one million people uprooted from Rafah in southern Gaza in a matter of 10 to 14 days remains extremely difficult, in particular since the Israeli military operation shut the key border crossing there in early May, the OCHA officer continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelivering aid in Gaza is a daily puzzle across the board,&#8221; she said, pointing to &#8220;the daily fighting, the insufficiency of absolutely everything you need, the regular attacks on our storage facilities, the pile of administrative impediments, bad internet, weak phone networks, destroyed roads, you name it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spend hours waiting at checkpoints, coordinating, compromising a way through.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>10 child amputees a day<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the head of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/press-briefing-by-unrwa-250624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNRWA<\/a>, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said on Tuesday that every day in Gaza, 10 children lose one or both legs amid ongoing Israeli bombardment.<\/p>\n<p>Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, also condemned an overnight attack on one of the agency\u2019s schools in Gaza City that reportedly killed around 12 people and injured 22.<\/p>\n<p>The strike brings the total number of UN premises \u201chit or damaged or targeted since the beginning of the war\u201d to 190, which is more than half of UNRWA\u2019s premises in the Gaza Strip, he said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Concern over \u2018crackdown\u2019 on anti-war protesters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In a related development, a top independent rights expert expressed concern at the recent \u201cviolent crackdown\u201d on anti-war campus protesters in the United States, where demonstrators are calling for a ceasefire and for a review of their institutions\u2019 links with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s alarming is the unequal treatment of those expressing themselves,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/sr-on-the-right-to-education-ohchr-240624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/special-procedures\/sr-education\/farida-shaheed&amp;amp;source=gmail&amp;amp;ust=1719401363349000&amp;amp;usg=AOvVaw2WUL4qk-hzcPrxjabrTFph\">Farida Shaheed, Special Rapporteur on the right to education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPro-Palestinian protesters, including Jewish students, confront disproportionately harsh responses, allegedly for antisemitic views\u00a0<strong>with criticism of the State of Israel conflated with antisemitism<\/strong>,\u201d she told the UN\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/sr-on-the-right-to-education-ohchr-240624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Rights Council<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in Geneva on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The independent expert, who does not work for the UN, noted that all governments \u201cmust prohibit incitement to violence, hostility or discrimination\u201d while insisting that the expression of critical political opinions was not grounds for the restriction of freedom of expression.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; 25 June 2024 Famine Review Committee: Gaza Strip, June 2024 \u2013 IPC\u2019s third review report Gaza Strip: IPC Acute Food Insecurity Special Snapshot (1 May &#8211; 30 September 2024) Gaza remains on famine alert after food security experts warned on Tuesday that more than one in five households \u201cgo entire days without eating\u201d.
