{"id":294412,"date":"2024-03-18T17:18:36","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T21:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=294412"},"modified":"2024-03-18T17:18:36","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T21:18:36","slug":"secretary-generals-press-encounter-on-gaza-18mar24","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/secretary-generals-press-encounter-on-gaza-18mar24\/","title":{"rendered":"Secretary-General&#8217;s press encounter on Gaza food insecurity report &#8211; Statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"top-fields-container\">\n<div class=\"date\">\n<div class=\"l-field-publish-date\">18 Mar 2024<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section>\n<section>\n<section id=\"block-system-main\"><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<p>The latest <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IPC_Gaza_Strip_Acute_Food_Insecurity_Feb_July2024_Special_Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> <\/em>on food insecurity in Gaza is an appalling indictment of conditions on the ground for civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s leading experts on food insecurity clearly document that famine in the northern part of Gaza is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of all Palestinians in Gaza \u20131.1 million people\u2013 have completely exhausted their food supplies and are facing catastrophic hunger, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians in Gaza are enduring horrifying levels of hunger and suffering.<\/p>\n<p>This is the highest number of people facing catastrophic hunger ever recorded by the Integrated Food Security Classification system \u2013anywhere, anytime.<\/p>\n<p>This is an entirely manmade disaster\u2014and the report makes clear that it can be halted.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s report is Exhibit A for the need for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire.<\/p>\n<p>I call on the Israeli authorities to ensure complete and unfettered access for humanitarian goods throughout Gaza and for the international community to fully support our humanitarian efforts.<\/p>\n<p>We must act now to prevent the unthinkable, the unacceptable and the unjustifiable.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>18 Mar 2024 The latest report on food insecurity in Gaza is an appalling indictment of conditions on the ground for civilians.
