Arabic\/\u0639\u0631\u0628\u064a<\/a><\/p>\n Jerusalem, 12 October 2023 –\u00a0WHO warns that the health system in\u00a0the\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Strip is at a breaking point. Time is running out to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe if fuel and life-saving health and humanitarian supplies cannot be urgently delivered to the Gaza Strip amidst the complete blockade.<\/p>\n Hospitals\u00a0have\u00a0only\u00a0a few hours of electricity each day as they\u00a0are forced to ration depleting fuel reserves and\u00a0rely on generators\u00a0to\u00a0sustain\u00a0the most critical\u00a0functions.\u00a0Even these\u00a0functions\u00a0will\u00a0have to\u00a0cease in a few\u00a0days, when\u00a0fuel\u00a0stocks are due to\u00a0run out.\u00a0The impact would be devastating\u00a0for the most vulnerable\u00a0patients,\u00a0including the\u00a0injured\u00a0who need lifesaving surgery,\u00a0patients in\u00a0intensive care units,\u00a0and newborns\u00a0depending on care in\u00a0incubators.<\/p>\n As injuries and fatalities continue to rise due to the\u00a0ongoing air strikes on the Gaza Strip, acute shortages\u00a0of medical supplies\u00a0are\u00a0compounding the crisis, limiting the response capacity\u00a0of\u00a0already overstretched\u00a0hospitals\u00a0to treat the\u00a0sick and\u00a0injured.<\/p>\n The situation has also\u00a0gravely\u00a0disrupted the delivery of essential\u00a0health\u00a0services,\u00a0including\u00a0obstetric care, management of noncommunicable diseases\u00a0such as cancer and heart diseases, and treatment of common infections,\u00a0as\u00a0all health facilities\u00a0are forced to prioritize lifesaving\u00a0emergency\u00a0care.<\/p>\n Access for\u00a0emergency medical\u00a0teams in the field is\u00a0severely\u00a0hampered by infrastructure damage.\u00a0WHO has documented 34 attacks on health care in Gaza since last Saturday that have resulted in the death\u00a0of 11 health workers on duty, 16 injuries, and damages\u00a0to\u00a019 health facilities and 20 ambulances.<\/p>\n Without the immediate\u00a0entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza \u2014\u00a0especially health services, medical supplies, food, clean water, fuel, and non-food items \u2014\u00a0humanitarian and health partners\u00a0will be\u00a0unable to respond to urgent needs of\u00a0people\u00a0who desperately need it. Each lost hour puts more lives at risk.<\/p>\n WHO\u00a0calls for\u00a0an end to hostilities and\u00a0the protection of health care and civilians against attacks.\u00a0WHO also calls\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0immediate establishment of a\u00a0humanitarian corridor to ensure unimpeded access for health and humanitarian supplies,\u00a0as well as for\u00a0personnel,\u00a0and\u00a0the evacuation of\u00a0patients and the injured.\u00a0WHO further reiterates its call for the respect and protection of health care.<\/p>\n WHO is ready to immediately dispatch trauma and\u00a0essential health\u00a0supplies through its logistics hub in Dubai and working with partners to ensure\u00a0that\u00a0they can reach the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing.
