Occupied Palestinian Territory<\/u><\/p>\n
Turning to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the UN there, Lynn Hastings, visited the Jenin refugee camp on Saturday, joined by representatives of a number of Member States.\u00a0Our humanitarian partners have concluded an initial damage assessment following last week\u2019s operation by Israeli forces, indicating that 460\u00a0housing units were damaged in and around the camp.\u00a0Of these, 70\u00a0housing units were destroyed or otherwise rendered uninhabitable.\u00a0 At least 40\u00a0families remain displaced.\u00a0 The camp remains largely without running water, necessitating temporary solutions, which include water trucks.\u00a0 Humanitarian teams, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East\u00a0(UNRWA), are also providing emergency assistance, medical supplies and mental health support.<\/p>\n

Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 I wanted to ask a question on Jenin.\u00a0 So, the Secretary-General gave comments.\u00a0 The Israeli ambassador asked him to retract them about what happened in Jenin.\u00a0 Secretary-General hasn\u2019t done that, as far as I know at this moment.\u00a0 And I\u2019m just wondering, what are the political consequences of any for the Secretary-General to not act on that request?\u00a0 Does he have to get on the phone with the Israeli ambassador?\u00a0 Has he had discussion?<\/p>\n
Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I\u2019m not aware that he\u2019s had a discussion with the ambassador.\u00a0 Maybe last week, I\u2019m just not aware of it.\u00a0 I think Farhan [Haq] was pretty clear on Friday, when he said the Secretary-General stood by his statement.\u00a0 It is not the first time in history and even recent history that this Secretary-General has made a statement in which certain Member States have asked them to withdraw and he has not.\u00a0 He\u2019s just stating what his opinion is.<\/p>\n
Question<\/u>:\u00a0 And if I can just ask one more.\u00a0 I was asked on Friday, but I\u2019m going to try again.\u00a0 I know you weren\u2019t here.\u00a0 The Secretary-General was asked at the stakeout whether or not he thought Israel had committed war crimes.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t answer the question.\u00a0 Anything to add?<\/p>\n
Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 If he didn\u2019t answer the question, I don\u2019t think I will.\u00a0 But I think his position on the events that we have seen recently in Jenin, I think was made very clear in what he said to you.\u00a0Other parts of the system may voice their opinion also in more legal terms.\u00a0 Abdelhamid?<\/p>\n
Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you, St\u00e9phane, and we\u2019ll come back, I want to follow up with the diplomat\u2019s visit to Jenin.\u00a0 On 18\u00a0April\u00a02002, after the first destruction of the same refugee camp by Israel, Terje Roed-Larsen, the then Special Envoy of the SG and the Middle East Peace Coordinator, visited the camp.\u00a0 And he said that what he had seen is a brutality beyond imagination.\u00a0 This is an earthquake; that\u2019s what he said.\u00a0 Now, Tor Wennesland, he didn\u2019t visit Jenin.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t visit Turmus Ayya, and he didn\u2019t visit Huwara, while other diplomats do.\u00a0 Why he doesn\u2019t take a step further and go see for himself, being the supreme representative of the United Nations?<\/p>\n
