{"id":253418,"date":"2021-05-27T17:37:38","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T21:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=253418"},"modified":"2021-06-07T17:44:12","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T21:44:12","slug":"efforts-to-aid-gaza-recovery-27-may-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/efforts-to-aid-gaza-recovery-27-may-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Efforts to Aid Gaza Recovery \u2013 27 May 2021 Daily Press Briefing \u2013 (Excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>27 MAY 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by St\u00e9phane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>**<u>Middle East<\/u><\/p>\n<p>You will have heard from Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, who today\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2021\/sc14535.doc.htm\">briefed<\/a>\u00a0the Security Council on the recent hostilities between Palestinian militants in Gaza and Israel, adding that the cessation of hostilities is holding.<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted the $95\u00a0million humanitarian flash appeal launched today, which you heard [about this morning] from [UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory] Lynn Hastings, and reiterated the Secretary-General\u2019s appeal to the international community to work with the UN on developing an integrated, robust support package.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Wennesland told the Council that it is the lack of the proverbial \u201clight at the end of the tunnel\u201d \u2014 of a political horizon \u2014 after decades of conflict, that kills people\u2019s hopes and provides space to those not interested in sustainable peace.\u00a0 He said that only through negotiations that end the occupation and create a viable two-State solution can we hope to bring a definitive end to these senseless and costly cycles of violence.<\/p>\n<p>Council members also heard from Philippe Lazzarini, the head of [the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)], who recently spent a few days in Gaza, where more than 250\u00a0people were killed and thousands more injured.\u00a0 He commended the work done by UNRWA staff in Gaza, who opened the schools they run there to the thousands of people who had been displaced by the escalation of violence.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Questions and Answers<\/u><\/p>\n<p>I think that\u2019s it.\u00a0 It is now your turn.\u00a0 Edie, go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you very much, Steph.\u00a0 I have two questions.\u00a0 First, on the conflict in Gaza, the UN human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, said today that the Israeli actions in Gaza may constitute war crimes, and she called on Israel to allow an independent investigation.\u00a0 Does the Secretary-General support those views?<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 The Secretary-General has nothing to add to what Ms.\u00a0Bachelet says, which is within her mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For information media.
