Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thanks, Steph.\u00a0 Two questions for you today.\u00a0 First one on UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East).\u00a0 The US has resumed funding, and it was received positively by administrators there.\u00a0 But the West Bank administrators said that settler violence has never been higher in the West Bank and that we\u2019re up 30\u00a0per cent on demolitions and displacements year over year.\u00a0 Why is this?\u00a0 And what does the Secretary-General make of it?<\/p>\n

Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m not here to answer the \u201cwhy\u201d. \u00a0I think you should ask those who are responsible for that.<\/p>\n

We will, as usual, report back monthly to the Security Council through our Special Coordinator.\u00a0 We have always and will continue to express our concern and our opposition to violence, as well as to the demolitions.<\/p>\n

Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you, St\u00e9phane.\u00a0 Today, Israel issued a statement\u2026 an official statement saying they will not cooperate with the ICC (International Criminal Court) and its ongoing investigation of war crimes, crimes against humanity, committed in the war on Gaza in 2014.\u00a0 Do you have any comment on that?<\/p>\n

Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I mean, our\u2026 as you know, the ICC is independent from us.\u00a0 I have no specific comment on that.<\/p>\n

We, for our part, will continue to regularly report back what we observe in the occupied Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n

Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Yeah, just returning to Abdelhamid\u2019s question about Israel\u2019s statement on the ICC, the Israel statement says that the ICC does not have any authority in this case.\u00a0 I know that the ICC is separate from the UN, but the UN is supportive of the ICC.\u00a0 And the ICC examined this issue at great length and decided it did have jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Does the Secretary-General back the ICC in the work it\u2019s doing anywhere it wants to work in the world and for it to decide its jurisdiction?\u00a0 Does he agree with that?<\/p>\n

Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Well, the\u2026 yes, the Secretariat of the UN and the ICC are separate.\u00a0 The Secretary-General, as a matter of principle, has expressed his support for the ICC and the important work that it does.<\/p>\n

As to the debate of where its jurisdiction is or is not, that is something that Member States have to decide, and he will not weigh in.<\/p>\n

Question<\/u>:\u00a0 But Member States of the ICC\u2026 Member States, the States Parties, have given that authority to the ICC, and they\u2019ve made a decision that they have jurisdiction.\u00a0 [cross talk]<\/p>\n

Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 No, I understand, but that is an issue for Member States to decide.<\/p>\n
