Richard\u00a0Peeperkorn,\u00a0on the occasion of\u00a0the opening of the COVID-19, 50 bed unit at the Ramallah Complex Hospital.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The two spoke about the health and epidemiological situation in the oPt and pledged to continue their strategic and collaborative approach to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthening the health system in Palestine to improve response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO continues to work closely with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19\u00a0outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The PA announced on 3 April that the West Bank lockdown will continue from Sunday 4 April till 3 May, as follows:<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants, shops, cafes, businesses, companies and ministries can operate at 30%\u00a0capacity<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacies and bakeries to be able to continue to\u00a0operate<\/li>\n<li>No movement between governorates including the city of Jerusalem, except for medical personnel, essential goods and\u00a0food<\/li>\n<li>Governors will decide the exceptions for the opening of any\u00a0sectors<\/li>\n<li>Fines will be issued for breaches of safety\u00a0measures<\/li>\n<li>On 6 April 2021,\u00a0in light of\u00a0the spike of COVID-19 cases in Gaza, local authorities updated their restrictive measures, as follows:<\/li>\n<li>All vehicular movement is prohibited starting from Wednesday, 7 April 2021, 9:00pm to Sunday, 11 April 2021, 6:00am<\/li>\n<li>Continuing with the nightly curfew from 9:00pm \u2013 6:00am, as imposed on 27 March\u00a02021<\/li>\n<li>Closing schools and universities, till further notice<\/li>\n<li>Closing wedding halls and weekly open markets<\/li>\n<li>Banning all gatherings in parks and open areas, including weddings and funeral houses held in\u00a0streets<\/li>\n<li>Decisive public health measures and strict adherence to hygiene protocols + physical distancing continue to be essential to reduce the spread of COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high:\u00a0despite slowly declining numbers of new COVID-19 cases in the\u00a0West Bank,\u00a0many\u00a0hospitals\u00a0remain\u00a0at full capacity,\u00a0with\u00a0ICU bed occupancy at 100%, and\u00a061\u00a0patients on ventilators\u00a0(8\u00a0April)<\/li>\n<li>The Gaza Strip now accounts for over half of all active cases in the oPt\u00a0(50.4%), followed by the West Bank governorates of Nablus\u00a0(15.5%), Jenin\u00a0(7%), Hebron\u00a0(6.8%), Tulkarm\u00a0(6.1%), Ramallah\u00a0(4.6%), Qalqilya\u00a0(2.4%)\u00a0and Bethlehem\u00a0(2%)<\/li>\n<li>The overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR)\u00a0across oPt\u00a0remains at\u00a01.1 %.\u00a0The CFR is the proportion of deaths among identified confirmed\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>On 30 March, health authorities in Gaza confirmed the first cases detected with the new variant\u00a0B.1.1.7 (first identified in the UK).\u00a0This variant is known to have been driving recent cases in the\u00a0West Bank\u00a0as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Maintaining essential health services<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" Gaza\u00a0with the Help of\u00a0WHO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Two new emergency medical teams will now be able to\u00a0increase emergency preparedness at five emergency departments\u00a0in\u00a0Gaza\u00a0hospitals.<br \/>\nAs part of this package, and with\u00a0generous funding from the\u00a0EU Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), WHO donated\u00a0medical\u00a0equipment, including oxygen\u00a0concentrators,\u00a0medical\u00a0cots,\u00a0 medications,\u00a0supplies\u00a0and\u00a0IT equipment.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>Laboratory testing and diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of tests conducted in the oPt has decreased by\u00a04% during the reporting period (2-8\u00a0April), with 57,585\u00a0tests\u00a0conducted<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, an average of\u00a03,282\u00a0tests per day have been conducted over the past week (26\u00a0March\u00a0\u2013 1 April) with a positivity rate of\u00a025%<\/li>\n<li>WHO delivered to the health authorities in the Gaza Strip,\u00a026,400 COVID-19 RNA extraction kits that are\u00a0essential to maintain the COVID-19 testing\u00a0capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As of\u00a01 April, the overall occupancy rate of COVID-19 dedicated hospital beds in the\u00a0Gaza Strip is\u00a038%, with\u00a0203\u00a0of 540 beds occupied.\u00a0Currently,\u00a034\u00a0of the 90 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds (38%) are occupied, with eight\u00a0requiring invasive mechanical\u00a0ventilation<\/li>\n<li>The COVID-19 designated hospitals in the West Bank\u00a0are\u00a0near their full capacity,\u00a0with 97% occupancy of hospital beds and 100% occupancy in ICUs. Ventilator usage is at 47%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Vaccination<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Vaccine delivery<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i6.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/40\/8FA\/352\/001719\/csfinal\/Capture1-6b4907d83d4dc6a1.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Latest\u00a0vaccine\u00a0arrivals<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>On 29 March, 100,000 Sinopharm vaccines arrived in West Bank as a donation from China:\u00a090,000 for WB, and 10,000 for Gaza<\/li>\n<li>On 30 March a further 25,000 AstraZeneca vaccines were also delivered to oPt from the Serum Institute of India, the first batch of\u00a0purchased\u00a0vaccines out of a total of 2 million:\u00a020,000 for WB, and 5,000 for\u00a0Gaza<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>COVID-19\u00a0vaccination\u00a0status<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 21 March Palestine kick-started its mass vaccination rollout campaign prioritizing medical staff at government and private hospitals, patients with kidney and cancer conditions, and the\u00a0elderly<\/li>\n<li>131,394\u00a0people have been vaccinated in total across the oPt (as of 8\u00a0April): 100,487\u00a0in the West Bank, and 30,907\u00a0in Gaza. These figures represent around 2.5% of the total Palestinian\u00a0population<\/li>\n<li>Israel has now embarked on its &#8216;second phase\u2019 of vaccinating over 100,000 Palestinian workers who received their first doses on 7 March (Source<a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-fbkhlt-l-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0COGAT FB<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Future\u00a0COVAX\u00a0consignments\u00a0(estimates)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A further 144,000 doses of AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccines are due to arrive through COVAX in batches by end of April, bringing the total number of AZ vaccines arriving in oPt through COVAX to\u00a0168,000<\/li>\n<li>An additional 102,960 doses of Pfizer vaccines have also been allocated to the oPt through the COVAX mechanism, with expected delivery date end of Q2, up to 8 weeks after signing the\u00a0PO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is WHO&#8217;s position on the safety of the Astra-Zeneca COVID-19\u00a0vaccine?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>On 7 April 2021,\u00a0the WHO&#8217;s\u00a0Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GAVCS), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the UK\u2019s regulator (MHRA)\u00a0issued statements. All concluded that the benefits of taking the AZ vaccine outweigh the very rare potential risks.
