{"id":249116,"date":"2021-04-01T18:39:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T22:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=249116"},"modified":"2021-04-12T18:46:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T22:46:35","slug":"palestine-election-shooting-incident-1-april-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/palestine-election-shooting-incident-1-april-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestine Election, Shooting Incident \u2013 1 April 2021 Daily Press Briefing \u2013 (Excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>1 APRIL 2021<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by St\u00e9phane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Middle East<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Staying in the region, the Special Coordinator for the peace process, Tor Wennesland, today welcomed progress made towards the Palestinian elections.<\/p>\n<p>He said he is encouraged by the completion of the candidate submissions to the Central Elections Commission.\u00a0 He called this an important step in the nomination process for the forthcoming Palestinian Legislative [Council] elections.<\/p>\n<p>He called for all to respect the electoral process and to resolve any disputes in a peaceful manner through official legal mechanisms.\u00a0 He stressed that all people must work towards protecting the people\u2019s right to vote and to decide on their own political future, particularly young people.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Coordinator added that the holding of credible and inclusive elections across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in East Jerusalem, is a crucial step towards renewing the legitimacy of national institutions, re-establishing Palestinian unity and charting a way back to meaningful negotiations to realize a two-State solution.<\/p>\n<p>We will continue to support this election process.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Questions and Answers<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 I have some questions on some other subjects, if that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 Palestinian elections, you just read out to us, given that Marwan Barghouti, the Palestinian prisoner, is now producing his own list to rival that of the Fatah list, there clearly is a bit of an upset.\u00a0 Does the Secretary\u2011General commit and urge the rest of the international community and the rest of the Quartet to respect the results of this election, whatever the outcome?<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Yeah, I mean, there\u2026\u00a0 Elections are to be organized.\u00a0 They should be, they should reflect the will of the people.\u00a0 And, obviously, it is about respecting the outcome, as in any other election that is organized fairly and openly.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 St\u00e9phane, I have two questions, one on the Palestinian elections.\u00a0 Sorry, I missed the statement.\u00a0 But the Palestinian Authorities say that they are going ahead with the preparation for the elections.\u00a0 However, the [inaudible] of Jerusalem must be given the chance to participate in the elections.\u00a0 There is\u2026\u00a0 they say there are no elections without the people of Jerusalem.\u00a0 Israel so far is silent.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know they will allow it or not.<\/p>\n<p>So, did the [Secretary-General] or his Special Representative speak to any Israeli official to allow the people of East Jerusalem to participate in the elections?<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Look, I think the Special Coordinator has said that the holding of these elections, including\u2026\u00a0 in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in East Jerusalem, is a crucial step forward towards the renewal of the legitimacy of national Palestinian institutions, among others.\u00a0 This is a message that he is conveying both privately and publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Somebody\u2026\u00a0 okay, thank you.\u00a0 On Monday, 30 March, a Palestinian prisoner was released after 20 years of jail.\u00a0 He served 20 years.\u00a0 His name is Majd Barbar, B\u2011a\u2011r\u2011b\u2011a\u2011r, his last name.\u00a0 On the next day, 31st, he was celebrating with his family and friends, his release.\u00a0 They had set up a tent, and there were about, hundreds of people were celebrating.\u00a0 Israeli occupation forces invaded the tent, shooting rubber bullets and teargas, injuring 12 people, and they arrested him less than 24 hours after his release, he\u2019s still in jail.\u00a0 The\u2026\u00a0 Are you aware of this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 I am personally not aware, but just send me an email with the details, and I will ask our colleagues in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For information media.
