With 61,400 doses in total delivered to West Bank and Gaza through COVAX, the focus is on vaccinating priority groups: frontline health workers, elderly, chronically ill, and those with underlying health conditions. WHO officials highlight the important work of COVAX.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>#PlayYourRole<br \/>\n#protectothers<br \/>\n#GetVaccinated<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO continues to work closely with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19\u00a0outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The PA announced on\u00a020\u00a0March that\u00a0that the West Bank lockdown will continue from Sunday 21 March till 3 April, with the following amendments:<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants, shops, cafes, businesses, companies and ministries can now operate at 30%\u00a0capacity<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacies and bakeries to be able to continue to\u00a0operate<\/li>\n<li>No movement between governorates including the city of Jerusalem, except for medical personnel, essential goods and\u00a0food<\/li>\n<li>Governors will decide the exceptions for the opening of any\u00a0sectors<\/li>\n<li>Fines will be issued for breaches of safety\u00a0measures<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0the Gaza Strip, the following restriction measures were also announced\u00a0in\u00a0light of\u00a0the spike in COVID-19 cases:<\/li>\n<li>Night curfew\u00a0(21:00 \u2013\u00a007:00)\u00a0imposed\u00a0as of Saturday\u00a027\u00a0March,\u00a02021<\/li>\n<li>Weddings and funerals held in the streets\u00a0are banned. A maximum of 100 persons are allowed in wedding halls, with strict public health\u00a0measures<\/li>\n<li>All\u00a0forms of\u00a0gatherings in parks and open areas\u00a0are banned<\/li>\n<li>Decisive public health measures and strict adherence to hygiene protocols + physical distancing continue to be essential to reduce the spread of COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very\u00a0high:\u00a0the number of new COVID-19 cases in the West Bank is decreasing slightly, but the daily death toll remains high (43 in the last\u00a048\u00a0hours)<\/li>\n<li>Many West Bank hospitals are\u00a0at full capacity,\u00a0with 97% occupancy of hospital beds and 100% occupancy in ICUs. Ventilator usage is at 47%<\/li>\n<li>The West\u00a0Bank governorate of Nablus (21.9%) still accounts for the highest of all active cases in oPt, followed by\u00a0Gaza Strip\u00a0 (14.8%),\u00a0Hebron\u00a0(14.2%),\u00a0 Tulkarm\u00a0(8.8%),\u00a0Ramallah (8.4%),\u00a0Jenin (8.3%),\u00a0Bethlehem (6.9%),\u00a0East Jerusalem (4.9%)<\/li>\n<li>The overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR) remains\u00a0at 1.1 %. The CFR is the proportion of deaths among identified confirmed\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Infections across oPt are being exacerbated by the spread of new variants, in particular the variant B.1.1.7\u00a0(identified in the UK)<\/li>\n<li>WHO in Gaza\u00a0is\u00a0monitoring the emergence of new mutations of COVID-19 in the Gaza Strip, and sending samples to Ramallah or Israel for variant\u00a0testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i4.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/17\/C06\/D53\/012921\/csfinal\/164815451_4110588132306381_6389890540869200448_o-68ca49d2131be6b6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><em>Handicraft kits to Improve Mental Health<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>WHO delivered handicraft kits for developing handicraft and food processing skills\u00a0of 600 mental health\u00a0patients.\u00a0This is part of\u00a0WHO\u2019s\u00a0 support\u00a0to\u00a0the mental health rehabilitation program at community mental health\u00a0centres in the Gaza Strip.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Vaccine\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Palestine kick-started its mass vaccination rollout campaign on 21 March prioritizing medical staff at government and private hospitals, patients with kidney and cancer conditions, and the\u00a0elderly<\/li>\n<li>At a ceremony held at the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, Prime Minister Mohammad\u00a0Shtayyeh\u00a0listed\u00a0some of the expected upcoming vaccine shipments for Palestine &#8211; in addition to the first COVAX shipments of AstraZeneca and Pfizer which arrived on 16 and 17 March respectively, for both West Bank and Gaza<\/li>\n<li>A shipment of 40,000 doses of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Gaza on 11 March, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), bringing to 60,000 the total number of donated Sputnik V vaccines from the\u00a0UAE<\/li>\n<li>A further 10,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines were also previously donated by Russia, and 2,000 doses of Moderna vaccines by\u00a0Israel<\/li>\n<li>A further 144,000 doses of AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccines are due to arrive through COVAX in batches at the end of March and end of April, bringing the total number of AZ vaccines arriving in oPt to\u00a0168,000<\/li>\n<li>29,485\u00a0people\u00a0were\u00a0vaccinated in total across the oPt as of 25\u00a0March: 13,499\u00a0in the West Bank, and\u00a015,986\u00a0in Gaza, targeting\u00a0frontline healthcare workers. In Gaza, this took place\u00a0in one of\u00a0eight\u00a0assigned vaccination centres<\/li>\n<li>155,000 people have registered to be vaccinated in total in the West Bank through the portal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-flijldy-l-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/vaccine.moh.ps<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Israel has also vaccinated\u00a0around\u00a0120,000 Palestinian workers over a two-week period and\u00a0are due to receive\u00a0their second\u00a0doses<\/li>\n<li>On the controversy surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine\u00a0the WHO\u2019s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) concluded on 19 March that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine continues to have a \u201cpositive benefit-risk profile, with tremendous potential to prevent infections and reduce deaths across the world\u201d and that a causal relationship between rare events of blood clots reported in a handful of cases after vaccination with AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine \u201chas not been established at this time\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em><strong>COVAX Vaccines Breakdown (AstraZeneca \/ Pfizer &#8211; West Bank \/ Gaza Strip)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The first COVAX arrivals in oPt on 16 and 17 March included:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>61,440 vaccine doses in total, of which 24,000 were AstraZeneca, and 37,440 were Pfizer<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>A total of 40,140 doses went to cold storage units in West Bank, and 21,300 doses in total to Gaza<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>AstraZeneca: 14,400 doses to WB; 9,600 to Gaza\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Pfizer: 25,740 doses to WB; 11,700 to Gaza.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Laboratory testing and diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of tests conducted in the oPt remains around the same as the week before, for the reporting period 18\u00a0&#8211;\u00a025\u00a0March,\u00a0with 53,482 tests conducted<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, an average of\u00a02,620\u00a0tests per day have been conducted over the past week (19 &#8211; 25\u00a0March) with a positivity rate of\u00a015%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As of\u00a025\u00a0March,\u00a0the overall occupancy rate of COVID-19 dedicated hospital beds in the\u00a0Gaza Strip is\u00a031%, with\u00a0168\u00a0of 540 beds occupied.\u00a0Currently,\u00a021\u00a0of the 90\u00a0Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds (23%) are occupied, with\u00a0six\u00a0requiring invasive mechanical\u00a0ventilation.\u00a0Gaza health authorities are planning to increase the number of\u00a0dedicated COVID-19 ICU and high dependency beds<\/li>\n<li>The COVID-19 designated hospitals in the West Bank\u00a0are\u00a0near their full capacity,\u00a0with 97% occupancy of hospital beds and 100% occupancy in ICUs. Ventilator usage is at 47%<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, following the training of 10 trainers (ToT) held last week, WHO supported a two-day training of the first cohort of 20 nurses, in fundamentals of intensive care nursing.
