The delivery included 72 CPAP masks to support breathing.\u00a0This was made possible thanks to EU Humanitarian Aid.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>On December 17, Prime Minister Mohammad\u00a0Shtayyeh\u00a0announced\u00a0new\u00a0public health\u00a0restrictions (expanding\u00a0restrictions\u00a0previously in place from 10-17 December) for two weeks in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the West Bank:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Movement\u00a0will be\u00a0prohibited\u00a0in all governorates\u00a0Friday and Saturday, and all governorates\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0closed\u00a0nightly\u00a0from\u00a019:00\u00a0to 6:00.\u00a0Movement between governorates\u00a0is\u00a0prohibited\u00a0for two weeks,\u00a0including\u00a0\u00a0Jerusalem\u00a0with exemptions for medical teams and essential\u00a0retailers<\/li>\n<li>All hospitals,\u00a0including\u00a0private\u00a0hospitals\u00a0must\u00a0make\u00a0provisions\u00a0to receive COVID-19 patients<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacies and bakeries\u00a0will\u00a0remain open, while hairdressers and clubs\u00a0must close and restaurants and coffee shops are restricted to delivery only<\/li>\n<li>All\u00a0schools\u00a0for\u00a0all\u00a0levels\u00a0and universities\u00a0to close\u00a0from 20 December and shift to distance\u00a0learning<\/li>\n<li>No entry\u00a0to\u00a0governorates, villages, cities\u00a0or camps\u00a0with high\u00a0numbers\u00a0of<br \/>\nCOVID-19\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Restrictions and conditions\u00a0will\u00a0apply\u00a0for\u00a0Palestinian workers transiting outside of\u00a0West\u00a0Bank<\/li>\n<li>Prayers in mosques and churches\u00a0must follow\u00a0special protocols. All weddings, funerals and\u00a0gatherings\u00a0continue to be\u00a0prohibited<\/li>\n<li>Government\u00a0institutions\u00a0are to\u00a0operate according to the state of emergency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the Gaza Strip,\u00a0the\u00a0weekend\u00a0curfew\u00a0(from 18:30 Friday to Saturday)\u00a0and other restrictions on gatherings, health and education service delivery continue until\u00a0the end of the month, as part of\u00a0measures introduced by local authorities to\u00a0slow the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high<\/li>\n<li>The oPt continues to witness an increase in COVID-19 cases, with significant community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 over the reporting period<\/li>\n<li>The number of deaths rose by 33% in the oPt and the overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR) rose by 0.1 to 0.9 %. The CFR is the proportion of deaths among identified confirmed cases<\/li>\n<li>Gaza accounts for 35.3% of all active cases, followed by the West Bank governorates of Nablus (16.3%), Hebron (7.8%), Jenin and Ramallah (7%) Bethlehem (5.2%), East Jerusalem (5.8%) and Tulkarm (4.1%)<\/li>\n<li>On 17 December, 1,015 cases were reported in Gaza, the highest daily record since the start of the pandemic. On the same day, 12 deaths were reported, the second highest daily death toll \u00a0recorded so far<\/li>\n<li>In West Bank, the second highest number of cases since the start of the pandemic was reported on 15 December with 1,598<\/li>\n<li>WHO continues to strongly advocate that communities implement effective prevention protocols to help curb the current increasing transmission trends, to save lives and to ease the pressure on the health system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Laboratory testing and diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of tests conducted in the oPt has decreased by 6% during the reporting period (11 \u2013 17 December), with 42,965 tests conducted compared to the previous week. \u00a0As of 17 December, MoH Gaza reported enough COVID-19 tests for 10 days until 26 December<\/li>\n<li>Provision of predictable flow of COVID-19 testing kits and supplies remains a major challenge, particularly in light of the increased need for testing due to the surge in case numbers<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, an average of 1,700 tests per day have been conducted in the past week (8-16 December) with a positivity rate of 35%, indicating testing needs to be scaled up. Local health authorities are strengthening staff capacity at the central laboratory to increase testing \u00a0to 2,500 PCR tests per day. WHO conducted a Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) training of trainers for intensive care specialists in the Gaza Strip on December 15. The course was specifically focusing \u00a0on treatment and management of critical COVID-19 patients and was led by Prof. Charles Gomersall of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Trainers put their skills into action and trained 10 junior doctors to prepare for their work in intensive care units of dedicated<br \/>\nCOVID-19 hospitals in Gaza. Thanks to the Government of Germany for supporting this training.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, the overall occupancy rate of dedicated COVID-19 hospital beds is 69%, with 364 of 530 beds occupied.
