The ventilators are essential to provide extra capacity to support\u00a0critically-ill\u00a0COVID-19 patients in the West Bank and Gaza.\u200b \u200b<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high<\/li>\n<li>The oPt\u00a0continues to\u00a0witness a concerning increase in COVID-19 cases, with significant community transmission of SARS-CoV-2\u00a0over\u00a0the\u00a0reporting\u00a0period,\u00a0in the West Bank and\u00a0in the\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Strip.\u00a0The West Bank is for the first\u00a0time reporting more than 1,000 cases a day<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a027% increase in confirmed cases\u00a0(by 12,912)\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a017% increase in\u00a0deaths (by 97) was reported between 27November-3 December, compared to the previous week (20-26 November). The overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR) remains at 0.8 %. The CFR is the proportion of deaths among identified confirmed cases<\/li>\n<li>Gaza accounts for 42% of all active cases, followed by the West Bank governorates of Nablus (14%), Bethlehem (7%), Hebron (6%), Jenin (6%), Ramallah (5%), Tulkarm (4%) and East Jerusalem (4%)<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a03 December,\u00a01,689\u00a0new confirmed cases were reported in\u00a0the West Bank,\u00a0the highest number over a 24-hour period\u00a0since the start of the pandemic<\/li>\n<li>An increase in the number of infected health workers is also raising concerns about adherence to infection prevention and control\u00a0protocols\u00a0in hospitals<\/li>\n<li>Authorities are discussing\u00a0additional\u00a0closures and movement restrictions to mitigate a further increase in case numbers<\/li>\n<li>WHO strongly recommends communities\u00a0to\u00a0implement effective prevention protocols to help curb the current increasing transmission trends,\u00a0to save lives and to ease the pressure on the health\u00a0system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"right\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i4.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/16\/D3F\/87B\/031222\/csfinal\/protect-fc8791cca207409e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em>WHO\u00a0recommends the public adhere to\u00a0stricter\u00a0protective health measures. Essential protective measures include:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>wearing a mask<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>following good respiratory hygiene<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>regularly washing hands<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>physical distancing of at least 1 metre including avoiding crowds and gatherings<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>staying\u00a0\u00a0home and self-isolating if people develop Corona related symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Laboratory diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of tests conducted in the oPt\u00a0has increased\u00a0by 18%\u00a0in the reporting period (27\u20143\u00a0December), with\u00a055,867\u00a0more tests conducted compared\u00a0to\u00a0the previous week<\/li>\n<li>With the increased community transmission and due to resource limitations\u00a0in the Gaza Strip,\u00a0local health authorities\u00a0on December 1\u00a0revised\u00a0the criteria\u00a0for\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0RT-PCR\u00a0testing,\u00a0to target high risk groups, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Symptomatic contacts and suspected cases above 50 years<\/li>\n<li>Symptomatic contacts and suspected cases of high-risk groups<\/li>\n<li>Symptomatic\u00a0MoH\u00a0and Ministry of Information\u00a0employees<\/li>\n<li>Patients admitted for more than 48\u00a0hours\u00a0in\u00a0departments for\u00a0intensive care, internal medicine, children, oncology, thoracic and respiratory\u00a0treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Symptomatic suspected cases of healthy young individuals, including children, are diagnosed clinically as COVID-19 cases and are requested to self-isolate for 14 days<\/li>\n<li>While the continued supply of lab testing kits and supplies remains a challenge\u00a0in Gaza, testing has been sustained. On Dec 1,\u00a0Gaza Central Laboratory reported critical shortages in COVID-19 detection and extraction kits, with supplies expected to run out\u00a0by\u00a03\u00a0December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i5.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/16\/D3F\/87B\/031222\/csfinal\/ventgaza-b95f31ff13170944.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em>WHO delivered 15 ventilators to the local health authorities in the Gaza Strip on 29 November to help prepare extra capacity for\u00a0critically-ill\u00a0COVID-19 patients as the numbers of newly confirmed cases continue to\u00a0surge.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This essential medical equipment was provided\u00a0with\u00a0the funding from the Government of Kuwait<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>In the\u00a0Gaza Strip,\u00a0the overall occupancy rate\u00a0of dedicated\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0hospital\u00a0beds is\u00a069%,\u00a0with 343 of 500 beds occupied.\u00a0Currently, of\u00a0the\u00a070 Intensive Care Unit beds, 43\u00a0or 61% are occupied, including 5 patients on ventilators<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0provision\u00a0of oxygen\u00a0for treatment of COVID-19 patients\u00a0at the European Gaza Hospital continues to be a challenge;\u00a0the Health Cluster\u00a0continues to\u00a0work with partners to resolve supply issues in early 2021<\/li>\n<li>Under the leadership of the\u00a0MoH,\u00a0Palestinian National Institute of Public Health\u00a0continued conducting Basic Life Support training in\u00a0November for 85 MoH and private clinic doctors, nurses, and emergency medical teams. The Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care course, conducted in partnership with Juzoor for Health and Social Development and Augusta Victoria Hospital, also continued this month for 20 doctors and nurses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em>\u200b&#8221;The training was extremely useful and badly needed with the increase of COVID-19 cases. We have been exposed to new topics in infection prevention and control in both primary health care and hospitals, we need to have such training periodically to be updated with evidence-based precautions and interventions. We have trained 30 health care providers at the province and they found the training very useful,\u201d commented a participant from Qalqilya. On November 25, the MoH and Palestinian National Institute of Public Health, hosted an Infection Prevention and Control training-of-trainers program for participants from the Nablus, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and Jenin governorates. On the same day, WHO stopped accepting new permit applications through the temporary coordination mechanism set up on 6 September to support patients and companions requiring exit from the Gaza Strip.<\/li>\n<li>From 6 September to 23 November 2020, 1,359 patient permit applications and 1,604 patient companion applications were submitted through the mechanism. By 23 November 2020, responses had been received for 1,075 permit applications for patient and 1,316 applications for companions. For patient applications, 767 (71%) were approved, 15 (1%) denied, and 293 (27%) delayed.
