The first series of Basic Life Support (BLS) training for the southern region of the West Bank was completed by the Palestinian National Institute of Public Health \/ WHO in collaboration with the MoH Emergency and Disaster Unit. A total of 173 doctors, nurses, and emergency medical teams working in MoH and private emergency units were trained. A further 50 doctors and nurses attended the BASIC (Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care) course, conducted in partnership with Juzoor for Health and Social Development and Augusta Victoria Hospital. Training for both courses will continue until the end of the year.\u200b\u00a0\u200b<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring\u00a0\u200b<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO has\u00a0received\u00a0$1.9 million\u00a0in funding from the oPt Humanitarian Fund\u00a0to be used\u00a0to\u00a0procure and deliver essential laboratory\u00a0supplies and equipment\u00a0to scale up testing\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0West Bank and Gaza\u00a0for 70,000\u00a0people;\u00a0to\u00a0support\u00a0case management and infection prevention\u00a0and control training for 100\u00a0health workers;\u00a0to\u00a0support risk communications\u00a0outreach and\u00a0the temporary coordination mechanism\u00a0to support Palestinian patients and companions required by Israel to apply for permits to access essential health services outside\u00a0the Gaza Strip<\/li>\n<li>WHO received a further\u00a0$814,000\u00a0from WHO headquarters\u00a0to\u00a0mobilize\u00a0lab and testing supplies for\u00a0Gaza.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high<\/li>\n<li>From\u00a01- 31 October,\u00a0the total number of COVID-19 cases rose by 14,721 cases (on average 474 cases per\u00a0day); and 187 deaths (6 per\u00a0day) for\u00a0the\u00a0same period<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Strip\u00a0continues to account for most of the active cases (36 %) in the oPt,\u00a0followed\u00a0by Nablus in the West Bank (16%),\u00a0and\u00a0by Bethlehem (11.5%), Hebron (7%),\u00a0Tulkarm\u00a0(3.7%), with\u00a0a significant drop in East Jerusalem (3%)<\/li>\n<li>Rafah border\u00a0crossing\u00a0between Gaza and Egypt opened for four days, from 2 to 5 November. As of 4 November,\u00a0758\u00a0Palestinians\u00a0crossed into\u00a0Gaza, and 2,270 people\u00a0exited\u00a0to Egypt. Returnees were asked to\u00a0present\u00a0a\u00a0negative\u00a0PCR\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0test certificate (not older than 48 hours), while those who could not obtain a certificate were\u00a0tested upon arrival at the crossing point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Laboratory diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>A total of\u00a0548,307\u00a0laboratory samples have been tested for COVID-19 according\u00a0to\u00a0MoH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>12,979\u00a0Palestinians are in quarantine (home or facility-based) to prevent further spread of the disease<\/li>\n<li>Capacity building activities continue, targeting health workers in the Gaza Strip. A fourth group of 15 junior doctors have started training for intensive care management of COVID-19 patients, funded by the Government of Canada; the sixth group of 18 maternal and child health workers have also completed infection prevention training, conducted by the Palestinian National Institute of Public Health \/ WHO<\/li>\n<li>WHO has delivered 10,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)\u00a0items, which will be used\u00a0bymedical\u00a0and non-medical staff working at Gaza\u2019s five main emergency departments, including the European Gaza Hospital (Gaza&#8217;s designated COVID-19 facility) and\u00a0at\u00a0the Respiratory Triage Centres (RTCs) &#8211;\u00a0tent\u00a0facilities\u00a0used to screen patients for COVID-19 before they enter the hospital, to prevent transmission of COVID-19 into hospital\u00a0facilities<\/li>\n<li>WHO has also delivered eight bedside kits to five emergency\u00a0departments.\u00a0These kits will\u00a0strengthen\u00a0preparedness\u00a0at the emergency departments\u00a0and will be used to treat severe injuries in\u00a0any future emergency or disaster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>East Jerusalem<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As of November\u00a04,\u00a020\u00a0COVID-19 patients are being treated in\u00a0the two main\u00a0dedicated COVID-19 hospitals\u00a0of\u00a0the East Jerusalem Hospital Network. Of these 14\u00a0are\u00a0at St Joseph Hospital and 6\u00a0are at Al-\u00a0Makassed\u00a0Hospital.\u00a0In addition, four COVID-19 patients are being treated at Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH), including two patient companions. A further five health workers at Al-Makassed\u00a0and three at AVH have COVID-19\u00a0infections, while two from St. Joseph remain in quarantine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Sustaining Essential Health Services: WHO Trauma Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO is still holding weekly online distance-training sessions in Gaza run by\u00a0NYCMedics (New York City Medics),\u00a0a disaster relief organisation that deploys mobile medical teams\u00a0worldwide.\u00a0Nearly 150 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel\u00a0have started their third week of a\u00a0six-week\u00a0training course. The course is an interactive refresher training\u00a0program designed\u00a0to improve and\u00a0update knowledge and skills<\/li>\n<li>Two leading international orthopaedic and anaesthesia experts are giving weekly live consultation lessons to Limb Reconstruction Centre physicians and orthopaedic surgical residents.
