The vehicles will be invaluable to support the transport of sick or injured Palestinians for emergency and non-emergency care during the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO proudly supported the coordination of the vehicles into Palestine.\u200b<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring\u00a0\u200b<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO Head of Office and acting Humanitarian\/Resident\u00a0Coordinator, Dr Gerald Rockenschaub visited the\u00a0Gaza Strip\u00a0on October 7 and 8. Several meetings were conducted with local authority officials to discuss the needs and challenges related to the current COVID-19 situation, as well as the provision of UN assistance in response to the\u00a0economic consequences.\u00a0Below is a summary of the latest challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute shortages of laboratory supplies and equipment needed for COVID-19 testing remain\u00a0a significant challenge,\u00a0in light of\u00a0the growing number of COVID-19 cases. The Gaza\u00a0central laboratory\u00a0projects\u00a0200,000 tests are needed until end December 2020<\/li>\n<li>Critical shortages of essential drugs and disposables continue to affect healthcare service provision in the Gaza Strip. As of end of September 2020, 47% of essential drugs were at zero stock level (less than one month\u2019s supply). This is\u00a0jeopardizing the lives of the most vulnerable, such as transplant (immuno-suppressed)\u00a0and hemodialysis\u00a0patients, and up to 350 oncology patients. Approximately 13,000 elective surgeries were\u00a0suspended due to resource\u00a0constraints<\/li>\n<li>Primary healthcare service delivery\u00a0is\u00a0compromised\u00a0by the\u00a0outbreak, since 50% of\u00a0primary\u00a0healthcare staff are re-assigned to support\u00a0the\u00a0COVID-19 response<\/li>\n<li>Shortages of qualified intensive care unit doctors and nurses needed to manage critical cases is another challenge. WHO\u00a0and partners like MSF\u00a0are\u00a0supporting\u00a0health authorities in training additional 60 doctors and 200 nurses on ICU case management, to enhance\u00a0health\u00a0system\u00a0capacities<\/li>\n<li>Shortages of personal protective equipment (PPEs) for frontline health workers\u00a0continue.\u00a0The Health cluster estimates that up to 150,000 full PPE kits, 1 million surgical masks and 2 million gloves, are needed for\u00a0the\u00a0response\u00a0over\u00a0the next three months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip,\u00a0movement restrictions\u00a0were\u00a0eased, allowing movement between governorates and partial opening of local markets.\u00a0A\u00a0curfew is still in place in all governorates from\u00a020:00\u00a0to\u00a007:00.\u00a0Local authorities are\u00a0also\u00a0preparing to resume operating schools\u00a0on October 10, after being suspended\u00a0and\u00a0relying on\u00a0e-learning\u00a0from\u00a025 August.\u00a0Around 35,000\u00a0Tawjihi\u00a0(senior high) students are expected to\u00a0return\u00a0to school as\u00a0an initial step<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0lockdown\u00a0in Israel, affecting East Jerusalem,\u00a0has been extended\u00a0to Oct\u00a014<\/li>\n<li>WHO continues to support the coordination and delivery of essential\u00a0equipment:\n<ul>\n<li>On 7 October, 4\u00a0Complete Blood Count\u00a0analysers\u00a0were delivered to\u00a0the\u00a0PA Ministry of\u00a0Health (MoH)\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0one\u00a0will be delivered to\u00a0the\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Strip<\/li>\n<li>On 9 Oct,\u00a0three\u00a0ambulances\u00a0were\u00a0delivered to\u00a0the Ministry of\u00a0Health\u00a0in Ramallah,\u00a0donated by\u00a0the\u00a0Republic of Korea \u200b(pictured)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the last week, WHO provided the following\u00a0essential medical equipment to emergency departments in\u00a0Gaza\u2019s\u00a0five\u00a0main hospitals to be used in\u00a0Respiratory Triage Centers (RTCs), see the \u2018Sustaining Essential Health Services: WHO Trauma\u00a0Programme\u2018\u00a0section\u00a0for\u00a0details<\/li>\n<li>WHO is continuing to\u00a0support the entry\u00a0and\u00a0delivery\u00a0of\u00a0medical equipment and\u00a0supplies\u00a0into the country\u00a0(including ventilators)\u00a0for Saudi Arabia, Germany and\u00a0India<\/li>\n<li>Significant quantities of medical equipment including ECGs and patient monitors are also arriving, with procurement support from UNICEF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 continues to\u00a0increase<\/li>\n<li>The total number of COVID-19 cases rose by 20,603 or 40% (average 686 cases per day) across the oPt in September. From 1- 7 October, the total number of COVID-19 cases rose by 3,814 cases (on average 476 cases per day). The training focused on general infection prevention and control related to reproductive health services during the COVID-19 outbreak\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>15,512\u00a0Palestinians are in quarantine\u00a0(home or facility-based) to prevent further spread of the\u00a0disease<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0the Gaza Strip,\u202f147\u00a0people are in one of\u00a0three\u00a0quarantine\u00a0facilities which include health\u00a0facilities,\u202fhotels\u00a0and other designated buildings<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Palestinian National Institute of Public Health (PNIPH) team\u00a0and WHO\u00a0in the Gaza Strip, conducted a series of infection prevention training sessions for 35 health providers working in Maternal and Child Health\u00a0services (pictured). It included discussions, lectures, and role-play. The team aims to train 160 health providers from reproductive health services, including doctors, nurses, midwives, lab technicians, and pharmacists over the next several week<\/li>\n<li>In the West Bank,\u00a0the PNIPH and\u00a0MoH\u00a0\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0Juzoor\u00a0for Health and Social Development\u00a0is conducting a series of\u00a0capacity building events\u00a0between September and December 2020 to build the capacity of the local\u00a0ICU\u00a0health workforce\u00a0focusing on the\u00a0BASIC (The Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care)\u00a0and\u00a0BLS (Basic Life Support)\u00a0training. More than 50\u00a0doctors, nurses, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) working in emergency units at\u00a0MoH\u00a0and private sector hospitals\u00a0build\u00a0their\u00a0skills\u00a0and knowledge to support critical care of COVID-19 patients<\/li>\n<li>WHO continues to coordinate and support the delivery of vital medical equipment for the COVID-19 response across Gaza and the West Bank (see images for details).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>East Jerusalem\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As of 7 October,\u00a033 COVID-19 patients\u00a0are being\u00a0treated at the two COVID-19 designated hospitals\u00a0in the East Jerusalem Hospital Network.\u00a0COVID-19 bed occupancy at St. Joseph is around 95% (with 24 patients) and 70% (with 9 patients) in Al-Makassed<\/li>\n<li>An additional 8 patients are treated at Augusta Victoria Hospital (4 inpatients and 4 companions). This is the first time AVH treats patients other than those admitted<\/li>\n<li>There are 5\u00a0health\u00a0staff infected with COVID-19\u00a0(3\u00a0from AVH and 2 from St. Joseph). Eight staff are under quarantine from Al-Makassed<\/li>\n<li>St. Joseph is almost doubling its COVID-19 bed capacity by 22 beds to 50 beds, by adding a new ward. This will increase the overall bed capacity of the designated EJHN hospitals to 72 beds, not including AVH&#8217;s 16 COVID-19 beds for its inpatients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Mental health and psychosocial support \u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-azlruy-l-j\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-bottom\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i6.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/46\/EFD\/DE4\/025918\/csfinal\/MH-e6f4abe0180e748e.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>This year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-azlruy-l-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Mental Health Day<\/a>, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This even aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. WHO has been working diligently to support MHPSS needs in the oPt.\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO in\u00a0the\u00a0oPt has supported\u00a0the\u00a0MoH\u00a0MHPSS\u00a0response\u00a0to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build the capacity for\u00a0six\u00a0emergency\u00a0MHPSS\u00a0teams on Psychological First Aid\u00a0and WHO Basic Psychosocial Skills:\u00a0A Guide for COVID-19 responders; supervision and support for\u00a0MHPSS\u00a0responders was provided<\/li>\n<li>Support a campaign on the impact of COVID-19 on young people specifically\u00a0on\u00a0the increase of substance use among them<\/li>\n<li>Promote messages on the importance of dealing with stress and\u00a0well being\u00a0on social media<\/li>\n<li>Procure psychotropics\u00a0for health authorities in Gaza<\/li>\n<li>Distribute information for frontline health workers on managing stress due to the pressure of their work on COVID-19 response in isolation and quarantine centers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Risk Communications and Community Engagement\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-azlruy-l-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-bottom\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i7.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/46\/EFD\/DE4\/025918\/csfinal\/CEkit3-6a4eeaa2c897c66d.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><em>WHO tailored and delivered 2,000 Community Engagement kits for Palestinian NGOs in the West Bank to mobilise their volunteer bases and share health information about COVID-19.\u00a0\u00a0The kits included alcogel, t-shirts, hats and a bag and were accompanied by 270,000 brochures.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The\u00a0COVID-19 Risk Communication and Community Engagement Campaign, led by WHO, UNICEF and\u00a0MoH\u00a0and supported by partners continues to share health information and address misinformation through its national campaign. In the last month (September) it has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Delivered more than\u00a0710,000 brochures to\u00a0MoH, NGOs (PNGO\u00a0and PMRS) and UNRWA in the West Bank and Gaza<\/li>\n<li>Broadcast two interactive Q&amp;A radio programs across seven radio stations in Gaza and West Bank. The episodes focused on COVID-19 preventive measures, essential public health services, Mental health,\u00a0GBV, stigma and rumors<\/li>\n<li>Launched a &#8216;Back to School&#8217; social media and mass media campaign in the West Bank to raise students&#8217; awareness of physical distancing and hand washing<\/li>\n<li>Shared\u00a0almost 150 social media messages with 40+ partners, governorates and media outlets and reached at more than\u00a04 million views of content\u00a0on Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Continued to broadcast of radio messages daily in Gaza<\/li>\n<li>Sent more than 1 million text messages to Gaza residents<\/li>\n<li>Shared messages via 16 billboards in West Bank and Gaza<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Sustaining Essential Health Services: WHO Trauma Program \u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-azlruy-l-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-bottom\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i8.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/46\/EFD\/DE4\/025918\/csfinal\/orthotable-6b4e0f4a5347010c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><em>In the last two weeks, WHO has delivered essential equipment to Gaza\u2019s Limb Reconstruction Centre, including an advanced orthopaedic mobile operating table (pictured), a sterilization device and a plaster electric saw. This is in addition to multiple items for Respiratory Triage Centers (RTCs), that WHO has helped set up outside Gaza\u2019s main hospitals.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO is working closely\u00a0with\u00a0local\u00a0health authorities\u00a0in the Gaza Strip\u00a0during the COVID-19\u00a0pandemic\u00a0to provide vital medical equipment and supplies to the emergency departments in Gaza\u2019s five main\u00a0hospitals<\/li>\n<li>The equipment will be used in special triage tents, known as\u00a0Respiratory Triage Centers (RTCs),\u00a0that we have helped to set up outside each hospital, to\u00a0reduce pressure on\u00a0emergency medical staff inside.\u00a0\u00a0The tents\u00a0are used to screen patients for COVID-19 before they enter the hospital to\u00a0stop\u00a0further spread of COVID-19 infection.<\/li>\n<li>In the last two weeks,\u00a0WHO has\u00a0delivered the following devices and equipment:<\/li>\n<li>10 triage tents (RTCs)\u00a0and five\u00a0electricity generators for the triage tents<\/li>\n<li>55 mobile\u00a0foldable emergency beds\u00a0to use inside the tents, and to transport patients to emergency departments<\/li>\n<li>10 monitors\u00a0to track patients\u2019 vital signs<\/li>\n<li>50 mobile screens to separate patients and stop them infecting each other<\/li>\n<li>90,000\u00a0Personal Protective Equipment kits (PPEs) for medical staff: coveralls, shoe covers, face masks and face shields.<\/li>\n<li>Since August, when Gaza recorded its first COVID-19 cases outside quarantine centers, the triage centers have processed 39,940 patients. The kits are designed to be deployed quickly and can help up to 400 surgical interventions. The kits contain vital surgical and other medical equipment (such as resuscitators, stethoscopes and surgical instruments) and supplies (such as gloves, bandages, swabs and tourniquets) and essential drugs to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations.
