Thanks for the\u00a0Government of Germany and oPt Humanitarian Fund.\u200b<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring \u200b<\/strong>\u200b<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Palestinian Authority received confirmation that Palestine will be eligible for GAVI support for procurement of COVID-19 vaccines &#8211; once available &#8211; through the global COVAX Facility, a collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines<\/li>\n<li>A joint meeting of the Ministry of Health\u00a0(MoH), UNICEF and WHO took place\u00a0on 22 September\u00a0to discuss the details of Palestine\u2019s participation in the COVAX facility, following this the\u00a0MoH\u00a0participated in\u00a0a\u00a0global virtual\u00a0brief\u00a0on the progress and next steps required to introduce the new COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available<\/li>\n<li>On 24 September,\u00a0the\u00a0MoH\u00a0and\u00a0the Consul-General of Italy with technical support from WHO\u00a0co-chaired a meeting of the Health Sector partners, which focused on maintaining the\u00a0essential\u00a0health services, including\u00a0immunisation, in times of COVID-19, amongst other important\u00a0health sector developments<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip,\u00a0the\u00a0Gaza-Egypt Rafah crossing is\u00a0scheduled\u00a0to open for three days starting from Sunday, 27 September 2020, allowing exit of 1,500 people to Egypt, and entry of approximately 2,000 Palestinians to Gaza<\/li>\n<li>Health authorities reported that six testing centers, across the five governorates, were assigned for sample collection for PCR testing of people leaving\u00a0to\u00a0Egypt, according to set schedules, in order to avoid crowdedness\u00a0and minimize transmission<\/li>\n<li>As per the updated protocols in the Gaza Strip, all returnees are to be directed to quarantine facilities upon arrival, where they would be tested on day 7 of quarantine. Most cases are linked to\u00a0community transmission<\/li>\n<li>The highest daily total for confirmed cases for oPt\u00a0was\u00a0recorded on 15\u00a0September\u00a0with\u00a01,118<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the West Bank,<\/strong>\u00a0most cases recorded are from Hebron\u00a0(16,626)\u00a0and\u00a0East Jerusalem (10,239)<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the Gaza Strip,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0cumulative\u00a0total of confirmed cases is\u00a02,613, including\u00a01,746\u00a0active cases,\u00a017\u00a0deaths and\u00a0850\u00a0recovered;\u00a0seven\u00a0patients are in a serious condition requiring ICU treatment, including\u00a0four\u00a0connected to mechanical ventilators, and three in critical condition.\u00a0A total of\u00a096\u00a0health\u00a0workers are also among the confirmed cases<\/li>\n<li>To-date, the\u00a0Ministry of\u00a0Health\u00a0reported a total of\u00a035,341\u00a0cases\u00a0have recovered: 34,491 in the West Bank and 850 in Gaza. Three hundred and twenty two have died, with an overall case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.67%<\/li>\n<li>More\u00a0than half (52.7%) of all confirmed cases are\u00a0female\u00a0(19,831\u00a0cases)\u00a0and\u00a0more than\u00a0two-third (70%)\u00a0of\u00a0all cases (26,594\u00a0cases) are below the age of 50 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Laboratory diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>A total of\u00a0385,169\u00a0laboratory samples have been tested for COVID-19 according to the\u202fMoH<\/li>\n<li>In both the Gaza Strip and West Bank, there are reports of limited lab supplies for testing for COVID-19<\/li>\n<li>On 22 September, the PA Minister of Health announced experiencing severe shortages in COVID-19 test kits and swabs as\u00a0100,000 tests were damaged before they arrived in Palestine due to improper storage conditions.\u00a0This is further constraining\u00a0testing\u00a0capacity<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, on 22 Sept health authorities in Gaza reported acute shortages in critical laboratory supplies required for COVID-19 testing. On 24 September, health authorities announced that the COVID-19 testing capacity at the Gaza Central Laboratory decreased by 50% due to depletion of extraction kits<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, in response to the critical shortage of COVID-19 laboratory testing supplies,\u00a0on September 24\u00a0WHO\u00a0mobilized\u00a0and delivered COVID-19 testing kits and necessary reagents to support testing of 8,000 people, thanks to UK Aid. In addition, on September 21, WHO delivered 20,000 swabs and laboratory extraction supplies to conduct 6,000 tests to in the Gaza Strip. These new supplies will allow testing to continue and scale-up efforts to contain the spread of the virus. WHO also supported coordination of medicines donated by the Government India, also due\u00a0to be delivered\u00a0this\u00a0week.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>34,191\u00a0Palestinians are in quarantine\u00a0(home or facility-based) to prevent further spread of the\u00a0disease<\/li>\n<li>In the West Bank,\u00a0this week,\u00a0WHO\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Palestinian National Institute of Public Health\u00a0with support of\u00a0Juzoor\u00a0and Augusta Victoria Hospital conducted a training on critical case management for 15\u00a0doctors and nurses. Additional trainings are underway for\u00a0MoH\u00a0staff\u00a0and health workers\u00a0from private health facilities<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0the Gaza Strip,\u202f76\u00a0people are in one of\u00a0three\u00a0quarantine\u00a0facilities which include health\u00a0facilities\u00a0and\u202fhotels<\/li>\n<li>On 17 September, the WHO conducted an assessment\u00a0at\u00a0the COVID-19 designated hospital, the European Gaza Hospital, to evaluate the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity.\u00a0WHO in coordination with its Regional Office, is planning to organise a series of training sessions for\u00a0staff of ICU on critical care\u00a0management<\/li>\n<li>On 22 September, WHO supported the training of 28 health workers that will be supporting preventive medicine teams in\u00a0trackingsuspected\u00a0cases and contacts under home-quarantine<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, WHO continues to coordinate and support the delivery of vital medical equipment for the COVID-19 response across Gaza and the West Bank (see images for detail).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>East Jerusalem \u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As of 23 September, there is a total of 35 COVID-19 patients in hospitals in East Jerusalem\u00a0including:\u00a07\u00a0patients in Al\u00a0Makassed\u00a0Hospital,\u00a025\u00a0in St. Joseph\u00a0Hospital,\u00a03 patients in Augusta Victoria Hospital.<\/li>\n<li>The East Jerusalem Hospital Network has a capacity for 50 beds for\u00a050 COVID-19\u00a0patients and\u00a064\u00a0% of the beds are\u00a0occupied\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0two designated\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0hospitals\u00a0(Al-Makassed\u00a0and St. Joseph); 90%\u00a0of these are\u00a0in St.\u00a0Joseph.<\/li>\n<li>There are\u00a012 staff in St. Joseph infected with COVID-19 in addition to 3 in Al-Makassed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Sustaining Essential Health Services: WHO Trauma Programme \u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-andho-l-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i8.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/C5\/768\/909\/010837\/csfinal\/Delivery_of_Gurney_for_ED5-dc91546b2aaad48.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-bottom\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i9.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/C5\/768\/909\/010837\/csfinal\/Delivery_of_Gurney_for_ED2-b6cb4bdf595c5d0c.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em>WHO delivered 55 special stretchers for transporting patients and a specialised surgical orthopaedic operations table to the Limb Reconstruction Unit (LRU) at Nasser Medical Complex, and on September 23 to local health authorities and emergency departments in the Gaza\u00a0Strip.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO is supporting specialised capacity building in the Gaza Strip by providing \u2018Virtual Class Through Glass\u2019 &#8211; weekly distance training sessions online in two levels of care:\n<ul>\n<li>A six-week long refresher training course in first aid for Palestine Red Crescent Society ambulance personnel and paramedics using apps and personalised online platforms. The training will increase the knowledge, skills and capabilities of paramedics<\/li>\n<li>Weekly live online sessions are being hosted for Limb Reconstruction Unit (LRU) physicians and orthopaedic surgical residents with limb reconstruction experts from abroad, focusing on the optimal management of patients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>WHO delivered a specialised surgical orthopaedic operations table to the Limb Reconstruction Unit (LRU) at Nasser Medical Complex, and 55 special stretchers for transporting patients to local health authorities and emergency departments in the Gaza Strip\u00a0(pictured)<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, WHO delivered 5,490 Personal Protective Equipment kits and\u00a010,000\u00a0single use uniforms, and five triage kits for Gaza\u2019s five main hospitals.
