They are\u00a0an\u00a0essential part of\u00a0the\u00a0emergency response\u00a0and support\u00a0frontline health workers in chaotic situations to:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>organize and keep order\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>prioritize the needs of survivors\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>get to work administering life-saving aid and\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>maintain infection prevention and control.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The kits will support 5,000 patients and 500 health workers during the COVID-19 outbreak. WHO also delivered\u00a0some\u00a05,000 overalls to local health authorities in the Gaza\u00a0Strip.\u00a0Thanks to EU Humanitarian Aid for supporting this delivery\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>WHO preparedness, readiness and response<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>WHO is continuing to work with partners to support Ministry of Health\u2019s (MoH) efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0Coordination,\u202fplanning\u202fand monitoring \u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the\u00a0Gaza Strip,<\/strong>\u00a0community\u00a0transmission\u00a0remains a serious concern due to capacity gaps\u00a0of\u00a0the health system.\u00a0All five governorates remain separated, with movement within each governorate allowed from\u00a007:00 to 20:00, except for hotspot areas with clusters of cases.\u00a0Schools\u00a0remain\u00a0closed until further notice<\/li>\n<li>WHO continues to\u00a0support\u00a0key priorities, including to scale-up testing\u00a0capacity\u00a0to 2.000 tests daily\u00a0and contact tracing;\u00a0enhance\u00a0case management capacity;\u00a0risk communication and community\u00a0engagement.\u00a0The provision of essential protective\u00a0equipment (PPE) for frontline health workers continues together with training in\u00a0infection\u00a0prevention and\u00a0control<\/li>\n<li>Additional challenges\u00a0include:\u00a0access to information about available health and testing services; take up of COVID-19\u00a0free call\u00a0line 103; citizens avoiding medical treatment due to fear of infection<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the West Bank,\u00a0<\/strong>On 16 September, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases the Prime Minister instructed the security forces to tighten the procedures and penalties against any violators of\u00a0MoH\u00a0preventive measures (e.g. wearing facemasks, physical distancing, preventing large gathering etc)<\/li>\n<li>All governorates reported temporary closure of several schools, due to confirmed COVID-19 cases amongst teachers and students, until tracing of the virus and disinfection of schools is complete. The Palestinian Authority is considering re-opening some schools for classes above grade four, according to a new classification which\u00a0takes into account\u00a0different locations and the number of confirmed cases (in classes and schools)<\/li>\n<li>MoH\u00a0announced that starting from next Sunday 21, a new colour\u00a0classification of areas will be used, and levels of risks will be assigned<\/li>\n<li>The Israeli\u00a0Government has\u00a0imposed a three-week lockdown starting Friday 18 September\u00a0at 14:00 to October 11 to address the spike in COVID-19 cases.\u00a0The lockdown will restrict people from travelling more than 500 meters from their homes, subject to exceptions for essential purposes. Businesses that serve customers in-person will be closed, but retailers selling essentials such as food and medicine will remain open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Surveillance and Laboratory diagnostics\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment remains very high\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 continues to\u00a0increase<\/li>\n<li>The total number of cases\u00a0in oPt\u00a0increased to\u202f43,345\u00a0including\u00a041,169\u00a0cases\u00a0in the West Bank\u00a0and\u202f2,176\u00a0in the Gaza Strip; 32 patients are in serious condition requiring\u00a0intensive care\u00a0unit (ICU)\u00a0treatment, with 10 requiring mechanical ventilation;\u00a0a total of 520 health workers are among those confirmed cases<\/li>\n<li>So far\u00a0this month (till\u00a0September\u00a017), the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen by\u00a030%\u00a0or\u00a013,407, an\u00a0average\u00a0of\u00a0788\u00a0cases per day.\u00a0In the Gaza Strip, cases have risen by 83% or\u00a01,820,\u00a0an average of 109 cases per day for the same period. With\u00a0most cases\u00a0linked to\u00a0community transmission<\/li>\n<li>The highest daily total for confirmed cases for oPt\u00a0was\u00a0recorded on 15\u00a0September\u00a0\u00a0with\u00a01,118<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the West Bank<\/strong>,\u00a0most cases recorded are from Hebron\u00a0(15,480)\u00a0and\u00a0East Jerusalem (9,502)<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the Gaza Strip<\/strong>,\u00a0the\u00a0cumulative\u00a0total of confirmed cases is\u00a02,176, including\u00a01,740\u00a0active cases,\u00a016\u00a0deaths and\u00a0420\u00a0recovered;\u00a0two patients are\u00a0in a serious condition requiring ICU treatment and are connected to mechanical ventilators.\u00a0A total of\u00a096\u00a0health workers\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0among the\u00a0confirmed\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>To-date, the\u00a0Ministry of\u00a0Health\u00a0reported a total of\u00a030,542\u00a0cases have\u00a0recovered:\u00a030,122\u00a0in\u00a0the West Bank (including\u00a07,482\u00a0in East Jerusalem)\u00a0and\u00a0420\u00a0in\u00a0Gaza.\u00a0Two\u00a0hundred and\u00a0seventy-eight\u00a0have died,\u00a0with\u00a0an\u00a0overall case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.64%<\/li>\n<li>More\u00a0than half (52.3%) of all confirmed cases are\u00a0female\u00a0(17,715\u00a0cases) and\u00a0more than\u00a0two-third (70%)\u00a0of\u00a0all cases (23,806\u00a0cases) are below the age of 50 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Laboratory diagnostics\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>A total of\u00a0359,873\u00a0laboratory samples have been tested for COVID-19 according to the\u202fMoH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-alkuill-l-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i5.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/6D\/3C4\/CA9\/004319\/csfinal\/ecgetc-9901450451028a3c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-bottom\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i6.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/6D\/3C4\/CA9\/004319\/csfinal\/119634494_3575990332432833_4963544766636604133_o-5318b724cefc4eb7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><em>Vital medical equipment which health workers can use to manage patients in the COVID-19 response was delivered to local health authorities in the Gaza Strip yesterday including:\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1 ECG Machine (to check a heart\u2019s rhythm and electrical activity)\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>100 stethoscopes (to listen to internal sounds in the human body)\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>50 sphygmomanometers (to measure blood pressure)\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>More items are on the way next week as part of this delivery generously funded by the oPt Humanitarian Fund.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>26,749\u00a0Palestinians are in quarantine\u00a0(home or facility-based) to prevent further spread of the\u00a0disease<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0the Gaza Strip,\u202f186\u00a0people are in one of\u00a03\u00a0quarantine\u00a0facilities which include health\u00a0facilities,\u202fhotels or other designated\u00a0buildings<\/li>\n<li>Capacity of health staff to manage severe and critical COVID-19 patients remain a concern and WHO with\u00a0health cluster partners is conducting a rapid assessment of Gaza\u00a0European Hospital\u2019s capacities. Identified gaps are to be quickly addressed through technical support<\/li>\n<li>On 12 September,\u00a0local health authorities\u00a0in Gaza released new criteria for discharging\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0patients from isolation\u00a0without requiring testing:\n<ul>\n<li>For symptomatic patients: 14 days\u00a0after\u00a0a positive PCR test result or\u00a0after symptoms\u2019 onset (whichever comes later).
