This week, we finally managed to deliver 10 ventilators and 2 defibrillators to help treat severe and critical COVID-19 patients, with more units to deliver in the coming months. These are the first to arrive in Gaza since the outbreak began\u201d,\u00a0said Abdelnaser Soboh, the acting interim head of WHO\u2019s Gaza Strip sub-office.\u00a0This delivery as part of our continuous efforts to support the health system to manage COVID-19 cases if community transmission occurs in Gaza. Thanks to the generous support of oPt Humanitarian Fund.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Overall COVID-19 Situation:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Total confirmed cases\u00a0in Gaza: 135<\/li>\n<li>Total number of active cases: 60<\/li>\n<li>Public Quarantine: 2,239 in 15 quarantine centres<\/li>\n<li>Total deaths: 3<\/li>\n<li>Total recovered:\u00a072<\/li>\n<li>Total samples: more than 18,273 tested (135 tested positive).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Detail on latest cases:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five\u00a0cases and 2 deaths\u00a0were confirmed in the\u00a0past two days (25 and 26 August).\u00a0On August 26\u00a021 cases including confirmed including 2 deaths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 death of 61-year-old male while being transferred from Indonesian hospital to European Gaza Hospital<\/li>\n<li>1 death of 60-year-old male oncology patient at Al-Rantisi hospital<\/li>\n<li>7 cases at the Indonesian hospital<\/li>\n<li>3 cases tested positive at AL-Shifa medical complex\u00a0including 1 health worker<\/li>\n<li>2 cases tested positive at Rantisi hospital<\/li>\n<li>1 case (Al-hayah\u00a0hospital)<\/li>\n<li>8 cases from different areas (6 Al-Maghazi camp; 1\u00a0Tofah\u00a0and 1 North Gaza)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On August 25:\u00a04 cases from Al-Maghazi camp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local authorities\u2019 response\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The source of infection (the index case) remains unknown, according to\u00a0MoH<\/li>\n<li>Contact tracing is ongoing and anyone who has been in contact with the confirmed cases has been asked to self-quarantine for 21 days and contact authorities<\/li>\n<li>All medical staff and patients in hospitals are being tested<\/li>\n<li>Confirmed cases will move from the Turkish Hospital to the European Gaza Hospital in coming days<\/li>\n<li>On 26 August at 23:30 local authorities in Gaza (MoH\u00a0and\u00a0MoI) announced that the 48hr curfew started on 25 August would be extended for another 72 hours.\u00a0 Those moving for necessity must adhere to the precaution measures (wearing mask, keeping physical distancing).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Capacity for COVID-19\u00a0case management\u00a0in Gaza\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Current bed capacity in Gaza is 350 beds:\n<ul>\n<li>The Turkish Hospital: 250 beds<\/li>\n<li>Rafah Field Hospital: 100 beds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Surge capacity being prepared by authorities:\n<ul>\n<li>400 beds\u00a0to be prepared at\u00a0Gaza European Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Facilities for up to 2,000 cases can be made available when authorities convert existing quarantine facilities into isolation centres for mild and asymptomatic cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Respiratory Triage centres (RTC) are to be established at the key Gaza hospitals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>North Gaza: Indonesian hospital<\/li>\n<li>Gaza: Al-Shifa hospital<\/li>\n<li>Middle Area: Al-Aqsa hospital<\/li>\n<li>Khan Younis: Nasser hospital<\/li>\n<li>Rafah: Al-Najar hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>WHO response\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>It remains critical to focus on containment of the outbreak and to prevent widespread human-to-human transmission and to ensure adequate treatment capacity, protocols and procedures are put in place.<\/p>\n<p>Since March, in Gaza, WHO has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scaled up lab testing capacity (from 0 to 4 PCR machines), by helping co-ordinate and procure PCR machines<\/li>\n<li>Has procured more than US $2\u00a0million\u00a0of essential medical equipment and supplies for Gaza including:\n<ul>\n<li>72 case management items including 10 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ventilators, 2 defibrillators, 9 ECG machines, 17 ICU monitors, 2,300 oxygen masks. 12 medicine items<\/li>\n<li>1 PCR machine, 196 testing kits (18,816 tests)<\/li>\n<li>115,500 gloves, 140,000 masks and other 15 PPE items (68,000 Personal Protective\u00a0Equipment\u00a0supplies)<\/li>\n<li>A further 20 ventilators, 20 ICU beds 20\u00a0ICU monitors and 40 beds are in the pipeline to be procured with the support of UNICEF<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Supported establishment and training of\u00a0MoH\u00a0and frontline staff for Respiratory Triage Centres with\u00a0MoH\u00a0and PRCS<\/li>\n<li>This week, WHO\u00a0delivered\u00a010 ventilators and 2 defibrillators\u00a0(see image)\u00a0and facilitated\u00a0the delivery of\u00a010 pallets of essential drugs to support the management of non-communicable disease (such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer) to local health authorities in the Gaza Strip\u00a0(see image).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center <strong>Risk Communications<\/strong>\u00a0Campaign, has:\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>Distributed an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/who.createsend1.com\/t\/j-l-quktykk-l-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emergency pack of materials (brochures, radio spots, social media cards and videos)<\/a>\u00a0to media in Gaza\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Broadcast radio messages daily on\u00a0 in Gaza for one month and used targetted Facebook advertising<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Organised printing\u00a0of health advice brochures\u00a0for health authorities\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Mobiilised\u00a0supporters to plan further awareness activity<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Concerns, Priority needs\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is continued concern about the ability of Gaza\u2019s health system to manage the surge in COVID-19\u00a0cases.\u00a0According to recent assessments conducted in February and March 2020, health authorities in Gaza reported:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gaza health\u00a0authorities\u00a0need to significantly scale-up testing of suspect cases\u00a0per WHO case definition, contacts of confirmed cases; test patients identified through respiratory disease surveillance; strengthen the infrastructure of the designated laboratories.\u00a0<strong>There is a\u00a0critical shortage of the testing kits, essential lab supplies and equipment to support\u00a0screening of COVID-19.\u00a0<\/strong>Currently there are four PCR machines in Gaza and capacity to test up to 1,000 people per day. The\u00a0MoH\u00a0plans to scale up testing\u00a0to 30,000 tests\u00a0per\u00a0month and requests 100,000\u00a0tests\u00a0to conduct COVID-19 tests\u00a0in addition to swabs and other reagents\u00a0for the next three months.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE)\u00a0kits\u00a0<\/strong>for frontline staff, both health and non-health, who deal with infected or suspected cases also need to be trained on the proper use of PPE to avoid being infected or infect others.\u00a0The immediate need is to provide up to 150,000 full PPE kits, 1 million surgical masks and 2 million gloves for the next three months for the hospital health workers dealing with COVID-19 patients<\/li>\n<li>Health facilities designated to receive COVID-19 patients, especially in Gaza,\u00a0<strong>lack essential medical equipment, supplies, drugs\u00a0for case management and disposables for treatment of respiratory distress\u00a0<\/strong>and other COVID-19 associated complications. In Gaza, the recent report from the Central Drug Store indicates that 48% of all\u00a0essential drugs\u00a0were at less than a month stock.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0MoH\u00a0in Gaza has requested\u00a038 drug items to address these critical shortages to treat COVID-19 and other critically ill patients.\u00a0\u00a0Additionally, Gaza has only 4 hours of electricity a day which makes response to the outbreak more\u00a0challenging<\/li>\n<li>According to the latest global reviews, an estimated\u00a05% of all clinical COVID-19 cases would be in critical condition and would require intensive care.\u00a0Currently, according to the\u00a0MoH\u00a0and the Health Cluster, there are\u00a097 adult ICU beds with ventilators in Gaza\u00a0(August 2020) in government with two-thirds already in use.\u00a0<strong>Ventilators, cardio-monitors, fully equipped emergency carts and portable X-Ray machines are in short supply<\/strong>\u00a0and at least\u00a050 additional ICU sets\u00a0need to be procured for at least three designated hospitals as all\u00a0MoH\u00a0hospitals already suffer from gaps in such vital equipment<\/li>\n<li><strong>Risk communication and Community Engagement is a priority.<\/strong>\u00a0With no community transmission detected in Gaza prior to August 25 2020, it\u2019s clear the population needs to be re-engaged with tailored messaging, campaigns and activity to encourage compliance with preventative measures for COVID-19 as well as to address uncertainty and misinformation and\u00a0mobilise\u00a0support and consolidate efforts within the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO teams are\u00a0conducting an\u00a0assessment of\u00a0the\u00a0five\u00a0respiratory\u00a0triage centers\u00a0(RTCs)\u00a0to\u00a0assess\u00a0their preparedness\u00a0to\u00a0manage suspected COVID-19 cases. So far,\u00a0the assessment has targeted the RTCs in Rafah,\u00a0Khan-Younes, Gaza and the\u00a0North\u00a0governorate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layout two-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload gnd-corner-image gnd-corner-image-center gnd-corner-image-top\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/i6.createsend1.com\/ei\/j\/C1\/94F\/445\/012807\/csfinal\/UNRWA3-99028a06db028a3c.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><em>This week WHO facilitated the delivery of 10 pallets of essential drugs to support the management of non-communicable disease to local health authorities in the Gaza Strip.
